BMW has launched the new M5 on our shores at Rs 1.99 crore (ex-showroom). It is the heaviest production-spec M5, but it is also the fastest ever! It will be sold via the CBU route and is positioned above the M4 in BMW’s performance sedan lineup in India.
The package that BMW is offering for the price seems very tempting, considering the fact that it still retains the V8 goodness and is extremely powerful, while having a spacious and practical cabin!
Here’s everything you need to know about the new BMW M5:
BMW M5: Powertrain
Usually we start with the exterior and interior, and then get to the performance of a car. However, this one being a Bimmer and that too an M5, it made sense to first talk about its powertrain! Under the hood, you get a 4.4-litre V8 engine which is paired to a battery pack and electric motor.
The engine alone makes 585 PS and 750 Nm, but when combined with the electric motors, it produces a staggering 727 PS and 1000 Nm. It also comes with an 18.6 kW battery pack and has an electric-only claimed range of 69 km. The hybrid powertrain comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission which sends power to all four wheels.
The BMW M5 sprints from naught to 100 kmph in just 3.5 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph, which can be increased to 305 kmph with the optional M Driver’s Package.
To support all that performance, the M5 comes with a sporty suspension setup giving the driver utmost control over the beast! It comes with standard adaptive M suspension, M xDrive and Integral Active Steering.
BMW M5: Design
The exterior design of the M5 sports the familiar kidney grille and sleek-looking twin headlights. It gets plenty of blacked-out design elements and looks like a more aggressive version of the standard 5-Series.

It comes with an M Carbon Roof, which reduces the weight by more than 30 kgs when compared to the model with the panoramic glass sunroof. The M Carbon Roof is part of the M Carbon exterior package, which also includes exterior mirror caps and a rear spoiler made of carbon fibre. The M light alloy wheel’s size goes up to 21-inch for the rear wheels.
BMW M5: Interior And Features
The M5’s interior comes with a modern and upmarket look and feel, with the latest curved displays running BMW Operating System 8.5. The display houses a 12.3-inch digital driver’s instrumentation and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment.
There are streaks of multi-colour ambient lighting, and an 18-speaker Bowers and Wilkins sound system as an alternative to the roaring V8 sound. You also get features like a heads-up display, multiple wireless phone chargers, and a 360-degree camera.
Apart from the multiple airbags on offer, you also get a suite of ADAS features such as rear collision warning, and lane departure warning including lane return with steering assistance. For a more detailed look at its interior and features, check out our story.
BMW M5: Price And Rivals
The BMW M5 is priced at Rs 1.99 crore (ex-showroom). At this pricepoint, it competes with the Mercedes-AMG C63 S E. Internationally, it rivals other luxury performance sedans like the Mercedes Benz E 63 and Audi RS 7.
