In a bold and groundbreaking move, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore a potential business integration under a joint holding company. This collaboration aims to revolutionise the automotive landscape by combining resources, talent, and technologies to accelerate efforts in electrification, vehicle intelligence, and achieving carbon neutrality.
The timeline for the business integration between Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi Motors kicks off today, with plans to execute a definitive agreement regarding the integration by June 2025 under a joint holding company. The entire process is expected to be completed by August 2026 when the company will be listed in the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. This schedule highlights the key milestones toward full integration, after which country-specific business operations will be finalized.
If realised, the integration could lead to the creation of a global powerhouse. The key synergies between the three giants include:
Unified Platforms: Standardized platforms to reduce development costs, boost efficiency, and create robust products across ICE, hybrid, and EV segments.
R&D Powerhouse: A combined R&D effort to spearhead advancements in software-defined vehicles, vehicle intelligence, and electrification.
Manufacturing Optimization: Streamlined production processes to cut costs and optimize production capacity.
Supply Chain Overhaul: Merged purchasing functions to enhance competitiveness and simplify operations.
Sales & Finance Fusion: An expanded range of sales finance functions, offering enhanced mobility solutions and financial services.
Talent Boost: A unified talent pool to foster innovation and attract top-tier global talent.
While this MOU signals a major step forward for Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi Motors as they lay the groundwork for an ambitious future in the mobility segment, the fate of the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi alliance remains uncertain. It is likely to dissolve, especially considering Nissan's decision to buy back its shares in September.
As these three giants combine forces, the possibilities are immense. From eco-friendly vehicles to groundbreaking vehicle intelligence, the future of transportation is evolving at a rapid pace.
