One of Italy’s oldest bicycle manufacturers, Cicli Olympia has unveiled a large-capacity battery pack called the PowerNine 900Wh for its electric pedal-assisted bicycles: the EX 900, EX 900 Sport, Performer and Mistral. To give you a perspective, Indian brand Hero Lectro’s top-of-the-line pedal assisted bicycle, the Lectro EHX20, has a comparatively diminutive 400Wh battery pack.

What’s really impressive is that Olympia claims a 70kg rider can cover a distance of up to 290km on a flat surface in a single charge using medium-low assistance. It can also cover long distances, about 85km to be precise, on roads with gradients as steep as 4000m. The icing on the cake is that the new battery pack is as light as its smaller 630Wh predecessor; and takes the same amount of space in the frame’s downtube. Olympia has used 50 units of 21700 LG lithium-ion cells in its battery pack. This is linked to an electric motor that generates a healthy 100Nm of peak torque.
The company offers a 4Ah battery charger which can charge the battery pack up completely in just 6 hours. So all in all, one overnight charge should last for about two weeks’ worth of daily commutes. That’s not a bad deal at all. All the bicycles feature disc brakes on both ends, a telescopic front suspension, Shimano gears and rugged tyres. While the Mistral 900 and the Performer 900 are hardtail bicycles, the EX900 range features a monoshock at the rear.
Electric propulsion is all the rage these days and electric bicycles are fast gaining popularity in urban environments. One of the reasons could be that the range anxiety is curbed to an extent thanks to pedal power. Moreover, physically pedalling your way will also make you fit. Two birds with one stone, we say.
