First, it was Apple, then Huawei, Xiaomi, and now Oppo. Several reports in the media suggest that the smartphone maker might be considering foraying into electric vehicles in India. What lends this idea plausibility is that Oppo recently filed trademarks for EVs.
While the report does not reveal any technical detail, it just hints that Oppo is expected to introduce EVs in India by 2024. It is yet to be known whether the company will manufacture the vehicles or outsource to third-party carmakers.
Considering Oppo is known for low-budget high-value smartphones in India, we can expect the company to target the mass-market segment here. In India, the Tata Nexon EV and MG ZS EVs are the only two mass-market models, with the luxury EV space comprising the Mercedes-Benz EQC, Audi e-tron, Audi e-tron GT, Porsche Taycan, and the Jaguar I-Pace.
Oppo has yet to confirm anything, so you might want to take these developments with a pinch of salt. But there’s nothing wrong in hoping, so fingers crossed.
