From putting the masses of India on four wheels to acquiring multiple high-profile car manufacturers, we thank Mr Tata from the bottom of our hearts for his invaluable contributions

Born in 1937 in Mumbai, Mr Ratan Tata was one of the most successful and prominent icons of India. Not only was he a very well-known industrialist and a visionary leader, he was also deeply admired for both his work and character. Of his many quotes, this one is my favourite, "If you want to walk fast, walk alone, but if you want to walk far, walk together." This profound statement emphasizes the fact that you might be able to get things done on your own, but if you want long-term success, you should focus on working as a team.

Mr Tata in his earlier days went to the USA to complete his studies. He even completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School, which is the most prestigious and renowned universities of the world. However, his focus and goal in life was to contribute to India and for India.

1991

In 1991, his leadership stint at Tata began where he continued to be the chairman till the year 2012. Over these 21 years, his achievements and contributions were very well received and he became a man who was honoured not only in India but also Internationally.

One of Ratan Tata’s greatest legacies is his contributions to the Indian auto industry. He was instrumental in completely changing the brand image of Tata Motors from a company known primarily for their trucks to being a well-known car brand in India.

The Sierra Was Born

The year 1991 also introduced to us our country’s first SUV, the Sierra. It was a car that was aspirational and later turned out to be one of the most iconic SUVs of India.

1995

Tata even played a crucial role in assembling the W124 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. In the year 1995, the German carmaker joined hands with Tata (previously known as Telco) to assemble one of the most popular luxury sedans, which became a statement today.

1998

A very important turning point in the Indian auto Industry was the launch of the Tata Indica, which was a car conceptualised by the legend himself. Launched in 1998, the Indica was the most modern looking car manufactured by an Indian company at that time. Its tagline “More car per car,” highlighted the company’s commitment to providing the masses a spacious car at an affordable price.

Inception Of The Safari

In 1998, we also got the Safari 7-seater SUV. Known for its rugged nature, off-road capabilities and spacious interiors. It was an SUV which wooed many Indian buyers and further cemented Tata’s footprints on our shores.

2008

Then came the Tata Nano in 2008, a car that aspired to put India’s middle class on four wheels . There was a lot of thought and inspiration behind the Nano. One day, after witnessing a scooter accident, Mr Tata realised  the risks that families are exposed to when  traveling on two-wheelers. That is when he got the idea of making a car and selling it at the price of a two-wheeler. This would not only put the middle-class on four wheels, but also give them a safer and more comfortable alternative. Sadly, the Nano did not achieve the commercial success as was expected. But, it did pave the way for many other automakers to launch low cost cars in India, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.

Mr. Tata’s legacy was not just restricted to India; his vision and leadership led Tata to acquire well-known brands such as Jaguar Land Rover, Tetley, Corus and Daewoo, solidifying the company’s international presence

For his exceptional contributions, he was awarded with the prestigious Padma Bhushan (third highest civilian honour) and Padma Vibhushan (second highest civilian honour) in the year 2000 and 2008, respectively.

Yes, his contribution towards growing various companies was significant and achieved with pure grit and determination. However, he will also be remembered for the kind of person he was. His values, ideologies, and ethics will always be remembered and cherished. A man who inspired the youth to do the impossible. The legacy that he leaves behind will never be forgotten, and his works and achievements will continue to inspire generations.

Ratan Tata, you were the definition and synonym of a “great human being”. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy will live on forever!
