The Bear 650 shares the engine with the Interceptor 650 but makes 4.5Nm more torque!

Royal Enfield recently unveiled the Bear 650, a scrambler based upon the Interceptor 650. The Bear 650 shares a lot of components with the Interceptor 650 but, what changes has Royal Enfield done to make the Bear different? Let’s have a look:

Design

The Bear and the Interceptor have a lot of design similarities. They share the same chassis and the engine. On the design front, the major difference which the Bear gets is a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear spoke wheels which gives the Bear a scrambler stance. Another major and noticeable change is the new 2-into-1 exhaust. For the Bear, Royal Enfield has ditched the dual-exhausts to shed some weight for the Bear to make it better at going off-roads.

The tail section is also different. The Bear gets a smaller scrambler-styled seat, and a round tail light instead of the rectangular one on the Interceptor. The Bear gets new colour schemes which look very attractive, especially the Two Four Nine which gets a green coloured chassis. Other minor changes include, raised handlebar and foot pegs which have been put a little forward for better ergonomics.

Engine and Underpinnings

The Bear and the Interceptor share the same chassis, which is a steel tubular double cradle frame unit. The engine is the same too, a 648cc parallel-twin air-cooled motor which produces 47.4PS at 7,150rpm but the Bear 650 makes 56.5Nm at 5,150rpm which is 4.5Nm more than the Interceptor 650. On the suspension front, the Bear gets an inverted fork with 130mm wheel travel instead of the telescopic unit on the Interceptor. The Bear gets hydraulic shock absorbers unlike the gas-charged ones on the Interceptor. Because of the longer travel suspension and the 19-inch front wheel, the ground clearance has gone up by 10mm and is 184mm on the Bear. The kerb weight has also been reduced by 2kg as the Bear 650 weighs 216kg.

Features

The Royal Enfield Bear 650 gets a 4-inch TFT screen which has been carried over from the Himalayan 450, gets Bluetooth connectivity and supports Google Maps navigation. It gets ride-by-wire which gives the Bear two riding modes: Performance and Eco. The Bear also gets switchable ABS unlike the Interceptor which gets a twin-pod console with a small LCD console.
