The Skoda Kylaq is the latest entrant in the subcompact SUV space, which is a crowded and competitive segment full of well-equipped SUVs. Out of the many SUVs in the segment, we will be comparing the new Kylaq with the popular Kia Sonet, which is one of the stalwarts of the segment, thanks to its complete package.
In this comparison, we have listed down their specifications, giving you a fair idea of how they perform against each other on paper!
Skoda Kylaq |
Kia Sonet |
|
Price (ex-showroom) |
From Rs 7.89 lakh |
Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 15.76 lakh |
Skoda will be revealing the full price range of the Kylaq on December 2, however, the starting prices of both the SUVs are nearly identical. We expect the Kylaq’s top-spec variants to be priced similarly too, and are expected to top out around the Rs 15 lakh mark. For similar pricing, let’s take a look at how their specifications compare:
Dimension |
Skoda Kylaq |
Kia Sonet |
Length |
3995 mm |
3995 mm |
Width |
1783 mm |

1619 mm |
1642 mm |
Wheelbase |
2566 mm |
2500 mm |
Boot space |
446 litres |
385 litres |
As you can see in the table above, both SUVs measure the same in terms of length. The Sonet stands taller and is also slightly wider than the Kylaq. However, it is the Kylaq which has the greater wheelbase, which means it should have comparably more cabin space.
Kylaq’s boot space figures are calculated without the rear parcel tray attached, so even though it offers a larger boot space, the on-paper figures don't give you the complete picture.

As seen above, both SUVs offer something or the other over each other. However, it is the Sonet which is slightly better equipped with extra features such as front parking sensors, ADAS, a larger driver’s display, air purifier, and connected car tech. The Kylaq on the other hand comes with wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple Carplay and also gets powered seats for the co-driver.

The Kylaq has been launched with a sole turbo-petrol engine, while the Sonet comes with three engine options - a NA petrol, a turbo-petrol and a diesel. The turbo-petrol engines of the two subcompact SUVs produce similar outputs, but it is the Sonet’s diesel engine which generates the most overall output. The diesel engine is also better suited for those who want better running costs.
The Sonet gives you more transmission options throughout the range, including an iMT (with both diesel and turbo-petrol) for those who want the best of both worlds, i.e. the convenience of an automatic with the engagement of a manual transmission.
The Kylaq and Kia Sonet rival other subcompact SUVs like the Nissan Magnite, Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
