The electric SUV will be the second vehicle from Sony’s new car company

Sony has unveiled a new Vision-S 02 SUV prototype electric vehicle (EV) at CES 2022 in the US. The electronics giant is poised to enter the global EV market with a new company, Sony Mobility Inc., to be established in early 2022. Its first car, the Vision-S 01 sedan, unveiled in 2020, is already being tested on public roads in Europe.

The Sony Vision-S 02 is a 7-seater SUV based on the company’s ground-up EV platform that debuted in the 2020 electric sedan prototype. It is powered by front and rear axle motors and floor-mounted ultrathin batteries. Each of the electric motors produces 270PS, and the top speed is rated at 180kmph.

We don’t know how quick it’ll be, but with the same powertrain, the sedan gets from 0-100kmph in a claimed 4.9 seconds! The SUV is 130kg heavier, but it’s unlikely to be a slouch. Both sedan and SUV will be equipped with double-wishbone front and rear suspension with air springs.

Inside, the Vision-S vehicles have an array of displays on the dashboard for driver’s instrumentation, infotainment and rear-view camera feed. Sony says that the car can be connected to your PlayStation console at home, and it lets you play online streaming games on the infotainment displays.

The Vision-S has high-resolution cameras and LiDAR sensors for 360-degree monitoring of the outside environment. It can warn you about emergency vehicles and road hazards ahead of time through the audio system when you’re behind the wheel. At other times, the cameras are used by the ADAS system that’s being tested in the Vision-S 01 sedan on normal roads in other countries.

Sony didn’t divulge launch timelines for the sedan or SUV, but we expect to hear more from Sony Mobility Inc. later this year. It’s too early to tell if Sony’s EVs will ever make it to India, but with a growing charging network and expanding EV market, India could become a lucrative market for more new global EV makers in the future.
