Student-crafted VW Pickup truck concept unveiled
It combines design elements of the Taigun and Virtus, while adding many cosmetic enhancements to the exterior as well as interior
Gets the “GT” badging, indicating that it is powered by the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol
It features mechanical updates as well
Students have crafted a funky looking Volkswagen pickup truck by merging the VW Taigun compact SUV and Virtus sedan. Skoda-VW’s program is in line with the government’s “Skill India” initiative, which provides training to students thereby creating innovative mobility solutions. This year, a group of mechatronics students have created a pickup truck over a span of 9 months. Here are all it’s details divulged:
Let’s start by setting the context first. The design of the pickup trucks combines the front end of the Taigun compact SUV with the rear end of the Virtus sedan. It features “GT” badging as seen on the Virtus GT and Taigun GT, along with blacked-out elements making it look sporty.
The pickup truck features roof mounted lights which gives it an off-road appeal. The VW logo upfront gets an illuminated animation adding to the bling.
From the sides, you will first notice that the ground clearance has been raised (by 60 mm) and this is done through tweaks to the suspension. It features 16-inch blacked-out alloys, wrapped around chunkier and larger off-road tyres. Further adding to the appeal are the orange-coloured brake callipers, which compliment the orange graphics on the exterior. To give it an increased water wading capacity, the pickup also gets a snorkel, adding to the overall rugged and off-road ready look.
Not something you would expect from a pickup truck, but this particular one also features a VW logo puddle lamp adding a premium touch.
Accentuating the overall pickup truck stance are the honeycomb shaped body decals, created using multi-layered foil technology. It also sports 3D printed wheel cladding which follows the honeycomb theme. Kudos to the students who were able to create the final concept vehicle using the latest technologies.
Additionally, the concept unveiled also gets 360-degree animated underbody lighting which can be controlled using a phone. The rear features a cargo bed which merges seamlessly into the rear. The concept has an overall length of 5200 mm, which is around 600 mm longer than the Virtus sedan. Rounding up the look is the illuminated and animated “Volkswagen” lettering for the rear.
The key addition to the interior is the animated ambient lighting which runs horizontally across the door pads and dashboard. Another inclusion is the lighting on the headliner, which gives a “star gazing” effect. While the variant it is based on and the features have not been disclosed, we expect it to be based on the fully-loaded top-spec variant as we can spot the sunroof and 10.1-inch infotainment system.
From the “GT” badging, it would be safe to conclude that the engine under the hood is the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine which makes 150 PS and 250 Nm. The engine can be paired with both, a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and a 6-speed manual gearbox with the standard cars.
This isn’t the first time that the Skoda-VW group’s Academy Dual Vocational Training program has come up with something unique. In 2023, they revealed a top-less Skoda Rapid and you can read more about it here. Let us know your thoughts about the pickup truck concept. Would you like to see it on our Indian road?
