The newly launched 5 door Mahindra Thar Roxx comes in multiple variants to choose from, with prices ranging from Rs 12.99 lakh and going all the way up to Rs 20.49 lakh (ex-showroom, rear-wheel drive variants). In this report, we will be talking about the mid-spec MX5 variant which sits in the middle of the Roxx’s wide price range. Using 12 real-life images, we take you through this variant’s pricing, design, features, and powertrain.
Also note that bookings for the Thar Roxx will commence from October 3, while deliveries will start from October 12 on the auspicious occasion of Dussehra.
The Thar Roxx comes with a bold and aggressively styled fascia featuring a new body coloured 6-slat grille and larger bumpers which get silver accents for contrast. There are no compromises made up front, as you get the new C-shaped LED DRLs with LED projector headlamps as standard and LED fog lamps.
In profile, it sits on 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels and misses out on the larger 19-inch alloy wheels offered with the top-spec trim. It gets a side foot step for easy ingress and egress, Thar Roxx badging on the front fender and the Thar logo placed on the ORVMs.
The rear sports C-shaped LED tail lights, a covered 18-inch spare wheel (not an alloy) mounted on the tailgate, a rear wiper with washer, and a beefed up bumper with a silver skid plate which dials up the ruggedness.
The Thar Roxx introduced a premium interior to the moniker, making the off-roader feel more upmarket. The MX5 variant comes with most of the practical features, covering the list of all the essentials. However, it misses out on the premium features which add the feel good factor to the cabin of the Thar Roxx.
Enter the cabin, and you will see the dual-tone white and black interior theme, including the white coloured leatherette upholstery which looks premium but will need to be handled with care to keep it clean. The dashboard features the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system which supports wireless Android Auto and wired Apple CarPlay.
It misses out on the 10.25-inch digital driver display and a 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system offered with the top-spec variant. Instead it gets an analog instrument cluster with a digital MID and a 6-speaker audio system. A benefit of not having the 9-speaker system, is that you get larger front door pockets for added convenience.
The lower centre console features a manual AC, while the higher-spec variants are equipped with an automatic climate control unit. However, it gets rear AC vents ensuring that the rear passengers don't have to rely only on the front AC vents.
With the MX5 variant, you get a single-pane sunroof, which according to this author is a good addition considering that it is a mid-spec variant. The Roxx also gets a panoramic sunroof, but if you want that, you will have to opt for the top-spec variant.
Rear-seat passengers sit on a wide bench which can easily accommodate three occupants. The passengers also get comfort features such as a reclining function, a centre armrest and charging ports.
Apart from the aforementioned features, it gets a wireless phone charger, cruise control, steering mounted audio controls, push button start-stop, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, auto-dimming IRVM and electrically adjustable ORVMs.
Its safety kit consists of six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), 3-point seat belt for all passengers, ISOFIX child seat mounts, hill hold and hill descent control, a reverse camera with front and rear parking sensors, and a TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system)
As mentioned above, it misses out on premium features including a 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, powered driver’s seat, a 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, connected car tech features, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, and level-2 ADAS. Out of all these features, which feature feels like a big miss for you? Let us know in the comments below.
