Current Altroz comes with a standard 5-speed manual gearbox.
Most other Tata models come with an AMT automatic option.
Expected to be priced at around Rs 1 lakh over the manual variants.
Since its launch, the Tata Altroz has only been offered with a standard 5-speed manual. Now, a new teaser tells us that the carmaker will soon launch the Altroz automatic, likely equipped with a new dual-clutch transmission (DCT). It’s likely to cost a premium of around Rs 1 lakh over the standard variants, and it’ll prime the Altroz to better rival the Hyundai i20 and the new Maruti Baleno, both of which already have automatic options.

The Altroz will be the first Tata model to get a DCT automatic. Other Tata models, such as the Tiago, Tigor, Punch and Nexon, are already offered with an AMT automatic. More expensive Tata SUVs, such as the Harrier and the flagship Safari, get a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
Dual-clutch transmissions, despite their high development and production costs, offer intuitive, and ideally, lightning-quick upshifts and downshifts. Although the Atlroz’s iTurbo variants are the perfect contenders for this gearbox, we could see the DCT offered with the diesel-powered Altroz as well.

Tata offers its premium hatchback with three engine options. The base engine is a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated unit that produces 86PS and 113Nm. You can also have the Altroz with a 1.5-litre diesel engine that makes 90PS and 200Nm. The more powerful 1.2-litre iTurbo turbo petrol engine offers the highest power output at 110PS and 140Nm.

The premium hatchback segment is no stranger to DCT automatics. We first saw this gearbox in the Volkswagen Polo GT, and currently, the Hyundai i20 offers it as an option on turbo petrol-powered variants.
We expect the automatic transmission to command a hefty premium over manual variants of the Altroz. Nevertheless, we are excited to see how the new gearbox affects the hatchback’s performance and driveability. The Tata Altroz automatic is expected to be launched in March, so keep an eye on this space for further updates.
