Tata has rolled out 2 lakh units of Punch from its plant in Pune since launch.
The micro SUV has averaged more than 10,000 monthly sales.
Punch will get an all-electric equivalent soon.
CNG-powered variant, showcased at the Auto Expo, expected even sooner than the EV.=
The Tata Punch carved out a niche for itself and made it its own space when it debuted in the country back in October 2021. And it had an excellent response, racking up the 1 lakh unit production mark in around 10 months. Nearly 1.5 years later, the Micro SUV is still going strong as Tata has rolled out the 2,00,000th unit of the Punch from its manufacturing facility in Pune. This equals to an average monthly sales of around 10,500 units since its launch.
In true Tata fashion, the carmaker kept the Punch fresh with a bunch of special edition models that popped up from time to time. And while it had very few competitors that were racking up less sales like the Maruti Ignis and Mahindra KUV100 when it launched, the competition was quick to notice the success and exploit the relatively nascent segment with a contender of their own. A first proper rival will come with the launch of the upcoming Hyundai Exter.
But Tata isn't set to stop things there. The Punch will also get an electric avatar based on the carmaker’s ALFA platform. The launch of the Punch EV will further give birth to an electric micro-SUV segment, so keep an eye out for that space as well.
At this year's Auto Expo, the carmaker had showcased the Punch CNG alongside the Altroz CNG, the latter of which has started reaching dealerships and is set to be launched soon. It sports a unique dual-cylinder setup which saves up boot space, and the Punch will also get this tech, making it a practical CNG car. Currently, the Punch is offered with a sole 1.2-litre petrol engine putting out 86PS and 113Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels only using either a 5-speed manual or AMT.
It is available in four broad trims: Pure, Adventure, Accomplished, and Creative. A seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car tech, automatic climate control, semi-digital instrument cluster and cruise control are a few of its highlighting features. Its 5-star rated Global NCAP safety package is partially courtesy of safety features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors with a parking camera; and of course, a stable body shell.

Tata retails the Punch between Rs 5.99 and Rs 9.51 lakh (ex-showroom). It rivals the likes of the Maruti Ignis, Citroen C3 and the upcoming Hyundai Exter, while subcompact SUVs like the Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger can also be considered as alternatives.
