After a brief teaser campaign, Tata Motors has revealed the much sharper looking 2023 Safari facelift. Pre-launch bookings for the updated SUV are open from today onwards and we expect prices to be announced in the coming weeks. This is the first major design refresh for Tata’s three-row SUV, which has been on sale since February 2021.
The significant redesign of the Safari 2023 facelift draws inspiration from the Curvv concept, resulting in a stylish appearance. It features a redesigned closed-off grille with colour coded accents and a continuous LED Daytime Running Light (DRL) that spans the entire width. Below the grille, there are rectangular enclosures housing new LED headlights and fog lamps, contributing to a more aggressive overall look.
From a side view, aside from the newly designed wheels and the addition of Safaro badging on the front doors, there are no major alterations. Moving to the rear, you'll notice a fresh set of interconnected LED taillights and a modified bumper.
In terms of colour options: Cosmic Gold, Galactic Sapphire, Stardust Ash, Stellar Frost, Oberon Black, Supernova Copper and Lunar Slate.
Upon entering the updated Safari, you'll encounter a redesigned black/white dashboard characterized by cleaner lines and design elements. It still boasts a floating infotainment system, now housing a larger 12.3-inch screen borrowed from the Nexon EV. Just below this screen, you'll find the streamlined air conditioning vents and touch-sensitive controls for the newly introduced dual-zone climate control system.
Additional design enhancements include the inclusion of a new four-spoke steering wheel adorned with an illuminated Tata logo, a gear lever reminiscent of Land Rover's style for the automatic variant. The drive mode selector has also received an update, now featuring a display between the controls.
The 2023 Safari brings a host of new features to the table, including a fully digital 10.25-inch driver's display, a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a knee airbag (total = 7), a powered tailgate with gesture-based opening and rear sunshades.
Notably, the vehicle retains several sought-after features such as ventilated front and second row seats (6-seater), connected car technology, a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry with push-button start, electronic stability control, 360-degree camera and an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) package.
The Tata Safari maintains its powertrain, featuring a 170PS 2-litre diesel engine, which can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Notably, the automatic transmission now includes paddle shifters for those who prefer more control over gear changes.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the manual variant is rated at a claimed 16.3kmpl, while the automatic version achieves approximately 14.5kmpl, offering a balance between performance and fuel economy.
It's worth noting that the updated Safari might come with a premium price tag compared to the current model, which begins at Rs 15.84 lakh (ex-showroom). The 2023 Tata Safari facelift is expected to compete directly with rivals such as the MG Hector Plus, Hyundai Alcazar, and Mahindra XUV700 in the market.
