With mandatory Autonomous Emergency Braking needed for all new cars in Australia, the made-in-India Australia-spec Jimny 5-door to get a host of ADAS features

  • Australia-spec Suzuki Jimny 5-door to get ADAS features.
  • New cars in Australia need to have Autonomous Emergency Braking as mandatory.
  • Select ADAS features are already offered in the Jimny 3-door.
  • These include autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and high beam assist.
  • Jimny 5-door exported from India should have these features.
  • India-spec Jimny 5-door doesn’t get any of the ADAS features.

The next market where the Suzuki Jimny 5-door would go on sale after India is Australia. The off-roader has been teased there and is expected to be launched real soon. And one interesting revelation that has come to light is the fact that the Jimny 5-door for Australia will get ADAS, something which the Indian model misses out on. Let us explain.

Recently, the Australian authorities have mandated that all new cars introduced from March 2023 onwards need to have Autonomous Emergency Braking as standard. Yes, it is the same rule which the Mahindra Scorpio N managed to dodge. And considering that the Jimny 5-door is going to be launched there soon, it needs to have this feature as mandatory.

But Suzuki is expected to go one step further and offer the Jimny 5-door with the certain suite of ADAS features that’s already on offer in the 3-door model there. That consists of autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and high beam assist. So you can expect the 5-door model to have the same features there.

The Jimny 5-door for the Australian market will be exported from India. And one bummer is the fact that the carmaker doesn’t need rocket science to install ADAS features, which are mandatory there. We feel Maruti should have offered these with the India-spec car even if it resulted in increased price. It would have made it safer and a much more rounded package.

To know our impressions about the Suzuki Jimny 5-door, check out our in-depth first drive review. Its prices start from Rs 12.74 lakh (ex-showroom) and it locks horns with the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha, both of which are currently offered in 3-door guises. They will soon get 5-door versions, which are larger alternatives to the Jimny.
