We are now halfway through 2024, and the first half has been promising for both buyers and automakers. We saw the launch of models like the facelifted Hyundai Creta, the new-gen Swift, the comeback of the X-Trail, and various models from other international carmakers. From the automakers' point of view, new sales landmarks have been achieved with their popular models.
Overall, the market has seen significant activity, and the sales numbers for the first half of 2024 are in. So let's take a closer look at the best-selling cars from this timeframe in this report.

It was never in doubt that the Punch would top this list. Having consistently led the monthly sales charts on certain occasions, Tata Motors' micro SUV continues its dominance. The Punch also experienced a remarkable 64 percent growth compared to the first half of the previous year, with over 43,000 more units sold than in 2023. A point to note here is these sales numbers include both the Punch and Punch EV.
Price Range: Rs 6.13 lakh to Rs 10.20 lakh (Punch ICE) / Rs 10.99 lakh to Rs 15.49 lakh (Punch EV)

In terms of features, the Punch comes equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a 6-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, connected car tech, a single-pane sunroof, and cruise control. Safety is taken care of with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, a reverse parking camera with sensors, and TPMS.

Coming in second spot is the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R with 99,668 units sold in the first half of 2024. These are great numbers for a hatchback that last received updates in 2022. However, compared to its H1 2023 sales numbers, the Wagon R saw a decline of 9 percent. Nevertheless, the Wagon R remains a top choice for buyers seeking a practical hatchback.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is available with two petrol engine options: a 67 PS/89 Nm 1-litre petrol and a 90 PS/113 Nm 1.2-litre petrol engine choice. You can further configure the 1-litre petrol engine option with a factory-fitted CNG kit, that is available only with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Another Maruti that experienced a decline in sales compared to 2023 is the Baleno, which saw a minor 6 percent drop. This is not a major setback for the Baleno, as Maruti still sold over 94,500 units in the first half of 2024. The premium hatchback also remains one of the best-selling models every month and commands an average waiting period of four weeks across major cities of India.

The Maruti Baleno is offered with a 90 PS/113 Nm 1.2-litre petrol engine, which can be paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. It gets features such as a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a 6-speaker audio system, a heads-up display, cruise control, and automatic climate control. Safety features include up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability program (ESP), and a 360-degree camera.
The only sedan making it onto this list is the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. It saw a 30 percent increase compared to the previous year, with 93,811 units sold in the first half of 2024. Despite being due for an update, the Dzire remains a consistent top-seller in India. That said, the next-gen model has already been spotted multiple times and is expected to receive updates similar to those of the fourth-gen Swift.

The Hyundai Creta, which has not only seen an 11 percent growth from 2023 but remains one of the top-selling models in the compact SUV segment. Hyundai has delivered over 91,348 units of the Creta in the first half of 2024 and recently achieved a milestone of selling one lakh facelifted Cretas since its launch in January this year. This success can be attributed to its extensive feature list and multiple powertrain options.

Sitting closely behind the Creta is the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. While it belongs to the subcompact SUV category, it outperforms its rivals despite being offered with just a single petrol engine option. Maruti sold 90,153 units of the Breza, marking a 10 percent increase from 2023.

A popular choice for MPV buyers, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, ranks seventh with 88,378 units sold in the first half of 2024. The nameplate recently reached a milestone of 10 lakh overall sales. Compared to the previous year, the MPV saw a whopping 78 percent growth, the highest of any car on this list.

Another model seeing a tremendous growth of 64 percent is the Mahindra Scorpio, with 85,326 units sold in the first half of 2024. Its rugged styling and ladder-on-frame chassis make it popular among buyers seeking an SUV. Do note that the Scorpio sales figures include numbers of both the Scorpio Classic and the Scorpio N.

Mahindra offers the Scorpio Classic with a 2.2-litre diesel engine generating 132 PS and 300 Nm, paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. It is equipped with features such as a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system (no Android Auto / Apple CarPlay), cruise control, automatic climate control, dual front airbags, and rear parking sensors.
The Scorpio N on the other hand is offered with a range of modern features such as a 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12-speaker Sony sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, and wireless phone charger. On the safety front it gets up to six airbags, electronic stability control , a tyre pressure monitoring system, and hill hold assist.
Engine options for Scorpio N include:
2.2-litre diesel unit ( 132 PS and 300 Nm or 175 PS and up to 400 Nm) with 6-speed manual or 6-speed AT

With its new-gen update, the Swift quickly regained popularity among hatchback buyers. Despite this, the model saw a 19 percent decline in sales compared to last year. This dip may be due to buyers preferring waiting for the new-gen model over the older one. Maruti delivered 84,172 units of the Swift in the first half of 2024, and it could see a resurgence in the second half of 2024.

Last but not least is the Tata Nexon, with over 80,000 units sold in the first half of 2024. Despite offering multiple engine options, it lags behind rivals like the Maruti Brezza in sales numbers. The sub-4m SUV also experienced an 8 percent decline compared to its 2023 sales figures.
