May 2024 cars sales are in and it’s no doubt Maruti Suzuki dominated the top 10 list. The 2024 Maruti Swift emerged as the best-selling car in India, overtaking the Tata Punch, which now takes second place. The Dzire also overtook the Hyundai Creta and Maruti Wagon R as the third best-selling model in India. Let’s see how each of these cars has performed in last month’s sales.

The Maruti Swift, one of the most popular hatchbacks in India, has undergone several updates and generational changes since its inception in 2005. Last month, more than 19,300 units of the 2024 Swift were dispatched, making it the top selling car in India.

Recently, Maruti introduced the fourth-generation Swift in India, featuring refreshed looks, an updated list of features, and a new engine. The 2024 Maruti Swift comes equipped with features such as a 9-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker Arkamys-tuned audio system, automatic AC with rear vents, wireless phone charging, and cruise control. It is powered by a new 1.2-litre 3 cylinder Z series petrol engine which churns out 82 PS and 112 Nm. It is available with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT.
The Tata Punch hit the market in 2021 as a micro SUV, and since then it has been in the list of top selling cars in India. In January 2024, Tata also introduced the all-electric version of the Punch. In May 2024, nearly 19,000 units of the Tata Punch were sold. Note that the sales figures mentioned above include both Punch ICE and Punch EV.

The ICE version of the Tata Punch uses a 1.2-litre petrol engine which makes 88 PS and 115 Nm. It is also available with an optional CNG powertrain with a reduced output (73.5 PS and 103 Nm). The petrol version comes paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT, while the Punch CNG is only being offered with a 5-speed manual transmission. The Punch is loaded with features like a 7-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch semi-digital driver’s display, and a single-pane sunroof. Passenger safety is taken care of by dual front airbags, rear parking camera, and TPMS.
The Punch EV on other hand comes with two battery pack options: 25 kWh and 35 kWh. Its electric motor specifications are detailed below:

Tata offers the Punch EV with features such as a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10.25-inch fully digital driver’s display, air purifier, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof. Its safety kit includes six airbags, electronic stability control, and a 360-degree camera.
The Maruti Dzire recorded a sales of over 16,000 units in May 2024, and it’s the only sedan in the list of top 10 best-selling cars in India. Later this year, Maruti Suzuki will introduce the new-gen Dzire that’s based on the 2024 Swift.

The Dzire uses a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (90 PS/113 Nm), available with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. It also gets the option of a CNG powertrain (77 PS and 98.5 Nm) only available with a 5-speed manual transmission.
One of the most popular compact SUVs in India, the Hyundai Creta, attracted more than 14,600 buyers in May 2024. Currently, it comes in regular standard and sportier N Line variants. The sales figures mentioned above are inclusive of both models.

Hyundai Creta received a midlife update earlier this year. Apart from new looks, it also got new features like dual 10.25-inch displays, dual-zone AC, a 360-degree camera, and a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems. The Creta comes with two petrol and one diesel engine options: a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol (115 PS/144 Nm) with 6-speed MT / CVT, a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol (160 PS/ 253 Nm) with a 7-speed DCT and a 1.5-litre diesel (116 PS/ 250 Nm): 6-speed MT, 6-speed AT. The Creta N Line on other hand only comes with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, and is also available with a 6-speed manual transmission option.
Maruti dispatched around 14,500 units of the Wagon R hatchback in May 2024.

The key features on the Wagon R include a 7-inch touchscreen display, a 4-speaker sound system, all four power windows and steering-mounted audio controls. Its safety kit includes dual front airbags, rear parking sensors, and hill-hold assist. It comes with two petrol engine options: a 1-litre petrol (67 PS and 89 Nm) and a 1.2-litre petrol (90 PS and 113 Nm). Both units are available with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT. The 1-litre engine can also be had with a CNG option (57 PS and 82 Nm), and it is only available with a 5-speed manual transmission.
With over 14,000 units sold, the Maruti Brezza was the top-selling subcompact SUV last month, overtaking the Tata Nexon by a comfortable margin. This is despite the fact that the Brezza gets the option of a petrol and CNG powertrains only.

The same engine can also be had in CNG with a reduced output of 88 PS and 121.5 Nm. The Brezza CNG is only available with a 5-speed manual transmission.
The Ertiga is the only MPV in the list of top 10 best-selling models. In May 2024, Maruti nearly dispatched 13,900 units of the Ertiga.

The Mahindra Scorpio is currently being offered in two versions: Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic. Together both of these models attracted more than 13,700 buyers last month. It must be noted that the Mahindra Scorpio is the only midsize SUV in this list.

The Mahindra Scorpio Classic is basically the older version of the Scorpio, which is only available with a 2.2-litre diesel engine (132 PS / 300 Nm) mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Its feature list includes a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, automatic AC, dual front airbags, and rear parking sensors.
The Scorpio N on other hand is the latest generation of the SUV loaded with amenities such as an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 12-speaker Sony sound system, dual-zone AC, cruise control, and wireless phone charging. It also gets more safety features like up to six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system, and hill hold assist. The engine options include:
2.2-litre diesel unit ( 132 PS and 300 Nm or 175 PS and up to 400 Nm) with 6-speed manual or 6-speed AT

While both cars are rear-wheel drive, it must be noted that the Scoprio N diesel can be opted with a four-wheel drive system as well.
The Baleno is the only premium hatchback on this list and it has crossed the sales of 12,800 units.

The same engine makes 77.5 PS and 98.5 Nm in CNG, and is available only with a 5-speed manual.
The Fronx is the Baleno-based subcompact crossover which was launched in India in 2023. It has also crossed the sales mark of 12,000 units and is one of the popular choices in the subcompact SUV segment.
