Sedan sales are diminishing at a faster rate than usual, but there’s still a soft corner for these cars from enthusiasts like you (and this author). 2021 saw a handful of sedan launches in India, but only one of them is from the mass market segment that makes bulk of the sales. It’s not all boring and naive, though, as we got luxury, fire-cracking performance, and even all-electric models.
So without further ado, here’re the top 10 sedans launched in 2021:
Facelifted Tata Tigor EV
Price: Rs 11.99 lakh to Rs 13.14 lakh
The facelifted Tata Tigor EV’s styling is in line with the standard ICE car and that’s just a small part of what’s new. The highlight is the presence of Tata’s new Ziptron EV powertrain, and the larger battery pack, resulting in a better claimed range. How has this panned out in the real world? Our detailed first drive review should give you that answer.
Skoda Octavia
Price: Rs 26.29 lakh to Rs 29.29 lakh
The newest iteration of the Skoda Octavia gave the shrinking entry-level premium sedan segment a breath of fresh air. Upmarket looks, a genuinely premium cabin, and strong performance from the 190PS 2-litre TSI petrol engine gives the Octy a vibe of a… ahem... mini Superb. Our in-depth first drive report should give you more insights about the Octavia
Facelifted Audi A4
Price: Rs 39.99 lakh to Rs 47.61 lakh
the automobile community
The Audi A4 was revived in 2021 in a facelifted avatar, packing minor cosmetic updates and an updated infotainment system. The talking point, though, is the shift to petrol power with a 190PS 2-litre TSI petrol engine. And before the year wraps up, Audi launched a new base-spec trim with pretty much what you need for a mouth watering price.
BMW 3 Series GL
Price: Rs 52.5 lakh to Rs 53.9 lakh
A 110mm longer wheelbase ensures the BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine treats its rear seat occupants to a much more opulent experience than the standard model. Its suspension has also been softened down to offer a better ride. But what else has BMW done to ensure the 3 Series GL stands out? Our first drive review gives you all the answers.
Mercedes-Benz A-Class
Price: Rs 41.55 lakh to Rs 57.49 lakh / Rs 79.5 lakh (A45S Hatch)
Merc’s entry-level model comes back to India as a sedan unlike the previous-gen hatchback. The good news is that the sportier AMG A35 is now locally assembled, making it one of the affordable performance cars you can buy from a big German brand. Merc eventually brought the hatch version of the new A-Class to India in the top-spec firecracker AMG A45S trim!
Mercedes-Benz E-Class FL
Price: Rs 64.55 lakh to Rs 1.71 crore
The E-Class got a facelift in 2021, keeping it in tune with Merc’s latest design language. It also gets Mercedes’ new MBUX infotainment system and you can connect it to your Alexa or Google device to operate some features. The 3-litre diesel engine also makes a comeback after a brief hiatus and Merc was quick to launch the update AMG versions as well.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Price: Rs 1.57 crore to Rs 1.62 crore
The world’s best car was first launched in June, in a fully loaded Launch Edition. And while it was very expensive (thanks to it being an import), the initial batch sold out quite quickly. A few months down the line, Mercedes assembled the new S-Class, which lost a few features but also dropped 60 big ones off its price. You should read this comparison review of the S-Class and Maybach GLS. We had fun, that’s for sure!
Facelifted Jaguar XF
Price: Rs 71.6 lakh to Rs 76 lakh
Jaguar silently gave the XF luxury sedan a facelift to keep it in line with its other offerings. The earlier Prestige trim has been dropped in lieu of the fully loaded and sportier looking R-Line trim. JLR’s Pivi Pro infotainment with connected car features also makes its presence felt. And most importantly, the diesel engine has been reintroduced.
Volvo S60
Price: Rs 45.9 lakh
The new Volvo S60 might have been late to the party, but better late than never, right? It comes with Volvo’s latest design cues and the Android-based infotainment system. And being a Volvo, it’s safe to say the S60 is one of the safest offerings in its segment. Read our in-depth first drive review to know what we like and didn’t like about the sedan.
Audi e-tron GT
Price: Rs 1.8 crore to Rs 2.05 crore
The Audi e-tron GT is the first all-electric performance car to be launched in India. It gets swanky looks, an ultra-luxurious interior, and plenty of punch. Audi didn’t skimp and even brought the RS trim to India for those looking for a seriously fast machine. Our launch story gets you covered on all bases if you had your eyes set on this swanky grand tourer.
