The SUV market in India continues to grow as we approach the end of 2021. We have seen new entrants this year in nearly every SUV subcategory, from compact family utes to luxury full-sizers. Here’s a list of the most memorable and significant SUVs that arrived on our shores:
Price: Rs 12.49 lakh to Rs 20.99 lakh ex-showroom
The commodious XUV700 can seat seven and offers segment-leading features like Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). You can have it with either a 2.2-litre diesel (offered in 155PS and 185PS states of tune) or a 2-litre petrol engine that makes 200PS. You can read our review here.

Tata introduced the Punch micro SUV in the Indian market in October. It is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine that makes 86PS and 113Nm, and it can be paired with 5-speed manual and AMT automatic transmissions. The Astor’s powerful 140PS 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine doesn’t let it feel out of place on a racetrack. It arrived in October, and while it is late to the party, the Astor has some tricks up its sleeve in the form of segment-first ADAS and AI voice assistant. Other features include hill descent control, hill hold assist, and voice commands.
Price: Rs 14.99 lakh to Rs 23.19 lakh ex-showroom
The Tata Safari is a 7-seater version of the Harrier, with plusher interiors, better second-row seats, and a third row (read the review). It’s powered by a 170PS 2-litre turbo diesel engine paired with a 6-speed manual or torque converter automatic. We also saw the SUV's new Gold Edition variant that packs more features such as ventilated seats and a wireless phone charger.
Price: Rs 16.30 lakh to Rs 20.14 lakh ex-showroom
We saw the Alcazar arrive in June as the three-row version of the Hyundai Creta. It gets a similar 1.5-litre diesel as the Creta and a 2-litre petrol engine that churns out 159PS/191Nm. The Kushaq arrived in the same month as the first all-new Skoda based on the localised MQB-A0-IN platform. It’s powered by 1-litre and 1.5-litre TSI turbo petrol engines paired with a 6-speed manual/torque converter and a DSG automatic, respectively. Find out more in our review.

Volkswagen launched the Taigun in September, a month after our first-drive review went live in August. It is based on the same platform as the Kushaq, is powered by the same TSI engine options, and offers identical features. It also gets an 8-inch digital driver’s display and ventilated seats on the top-spec 1-litre TSI variant.
Price: Rs 31.80 lakh to Rs 32.80 lakh ex-showroom

As far as ultra-luxury SUVs go, it’s hard to fault the Maybach GLS SUV’s dazzling aesthetic. It was launched in June as an alternative to the Bentley Bentaya and Rolls Royce Cullinan. Jaguar’s first electric SUV finally made it to India earlier this year at an eye-watering price tag. It’s powered by electric motors with a total output of 400PS and 696Nm, good for a blistering 0-100kmph time of 4.8 seconds. It gets 470km of range and rivals the Mercedes-Benz EQC, Audi e-tron, and the upcoming BMW iX in India.
Price: Rs 1.01 crore to Rs 1.19 crore ex-showroom
The Audi e-tron joined India’s sparsely populated EV space when it was launched in July. The top-spec 55 variant gets you a range of up to 484km and over 400PS. It’s also available in a Sportback coupe-SUV variant.
