This week’s edition of weekly car news had a flurry of topics in India and overseas make the headlines, with launches, unveils and important announcements on upcoming cars. Missed out on all the dope? Well, we’ve compiled a list on the top car news of the week:
Audi decided to give its flagship sedan in India, the A8L, a midlife refresh. The facelift gives the A8L a sportier identity in line with the carmaker’s other models, retains the familiar yet feature-loaded cabin, and continues to be a petrol-only offering. It also now comes in two trims which has given it a more affordable starting price.
The Nissan Magnite recently achieved 1 lakh bookings and 50,000 deliveries. To celebrate that, the carmaker has introduced a Red Edition trim to the subcompact SUV’s trim lineup. Like the name suggests, this XV-based trim gets splashes of red accents inside and out, with a few extra bits from the optional ‘Premium Pack’ now standard in the Red Edition.
A lot of tinkering around has been done for the Tata Nexon. For starters, there’s a new mid-spec XM+(S) variant that gives a more affordable starting point for the Harman touchscreen infotainment system and rear AC vents.
The other big rejig comes in its electric counterpart, with the standard range model being updated with smartwatch connectivity, cruise control, multi-mode regenerative braking and indirect tyre pressure monitoring (TPMS) as standard features. It's also now called the Nexon EV Prime with these features also being added to existing Nexon EVs via a software update that’s slated to arrive around July 25.
At long last, Maruti Suzuki’s version of the recently revealed Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder gets a name. Called the Grand Vitara, it's a moniker’s return since 2013, with the carmaker releasing multiple teasers of its design, revealing distinctive styling elements over its Toyota counterpart despite being the same compact SUVs under the skin. It’ll debut globally on July 20, though pre-launch bookings are already open for a token amount of Rs 11,000.
After an announcement in May, Hyundai has now taken the wraps off the 2022 Tucson in India. It gets a sportier look thanks to Hyundai's new ‘Parametric Dynamic’ design language, and will be equipped with a boatload of tech, as well as being Hyundai’s first ADAS offering in India. The flagship SUV will have 2-litre petrol and diesel engines on offer limited to automatic gearboxes. A launch is expected in early August with bookings slated to begin on July 18.
After opening the order books on the 2022 Range Rover in India in January, Land Rover has commenced deliveries of the new ‘Rangie’ in India. The fourth iteration of this flagship SUV brings in a smoother and cleaner body in two guises, three seating options, a boatload of tech, as well as 3-litre petrol and diesel engines and a BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. Speaking of engines, the carmaker has also revealed the prices of the 3-litre six-cylinder petrol variants as well as the seven-seater variants.
There’s a whole load of topics in markets abroad that caught our attention. They include the Mini Cooper SE electric hatch going topless, the Honda CR-V getting a new iteration with more rugged styling in America, a minimalistic interior, and hybrid propulsion as well as Skoda teasing a practical interior of the all-electric Vision 7S concept.
But it was Hyundai who grabbed most of the eyeballs this week with the carmaker revealing the technical dope on the recently revealed Ioniq 6 EV, debuting its version of the Kia Carens, called the Stargazer and celebrating ‘N’ day by unleashing two unique and harcore electric concepts.
