In 2021, new incentives and more generous subsidies from state and central governments helped push electric vehicle (EV) sales in India. Mainstream carmakers added electric cars to their lineups, bringing much-needed diversity to the market. But, since many of this year’s EVs were from big luxury brands, the growth of zero-emission vehicles in India was far from exponential.
Here’s a complete roundup of all the new and updated EVs that were launched in India in 2021:
Price: Rs 21 lakh to Rs 24.68 lakh (ex-showroom)
Earlier this year, MG updated the ZS EV with a new battery pack and better ground clearance. The new 44.5 kWh pack gets you an impressive 419km claimed range, and it can be charged up to 80 percent in under an hour if you plug it into a DC fast charger. MG has added 16mm to the SUV’s ride height and a few more millimetres to the tyre sidewall to help the ZS EV better handle Indian road conditions.
Price: Rs 1.06 crore to Rs 1.12 crore (ex-showroom)
Jaguar introduced its first electric vehicle, the I-Pace, in India this year. It’s a cutting-edge AWD powertrain with 400PS of power -- enough to get you from 0-100kmph in 4.8 seconds! Unfortunately, it retails for an eye-watering price that’s likely to keep it from becoming affordable even as a used car. Check it out here.
Price: Rs 1.01 crore to Rs 1.18 crore (ex-showroom)
The Audi e-tron arrived in India as a luxurious and commodious alternative to the I-Pace. As standard, it gets you 300PS and 540Nm and a range of up to 379km. But the premium to upgrade to the top-spec 55 variant is relatively small, and it gets you 484km of range and a peak power output of 408PS/664Nm, enough for a 5.7-second 0-100kmph sprint. Audi also offers the top-spec e-tron in a coupe-SUV body style for a similar price.
Price: Rs 11.99 lakh to Rs 13.14 lakh (ex-showroom)
This year, Tata launched the facelifted Tigor EV with a Nexon-derived Ziptron powertrain. The electric sub-4m sedan now gets a respectable ARAI-claimed 306km driving range and a more powerful 75PS/170Nm electric motor. In addition, the EV has a 4-star Global NCAP crash test rating, and it’s one of the few electric cars to get government subsidies in India.
Price: Rs 1.8 crore to Rs 2.05 crore (ex-showroom)
The Audi e-tron GT is an environmentally conscious sports sedan for the ultra-rich. Its exorbitant starting price gets you 476PS of power and a 500km driving range. But EV buyers in that segment will likely find the top-spec e-tron GT RS more lucrative. It has 600PS on tap and a supercar-rivalling 0-100kmph time of 3.3 seconds. Find out all about it in our launch story.
Price: Rs 1.5 crore and above (ex-showroom)
Despite its similarities to the e-tron GT, Porsche has launched the Taycan at a slightly lower starting price than the Audi. Porsche’s electric sedan gets you sports car dynamics in a zero-emissions package and over 400PS even in the standard variant. The top-spec Taycan Turbo S has 761PS, and with a 0-100kmph time of 2.8 seconds, it’s the quickest EV you can currently buy in India.
Despite the increased EV adoption in India, only a few well-heeled Indians stand to enjoy since mass-market electric cars were given a miss this year. Moreover, border tensions have prevented affordable Chinese EVs from entering our market, and exorbitant taxes and customs duties have kept prices high for fully imported models.
We can only look to 2022 for more affordable locally produced models such as the Mahindra e-KUV100/XUV300 Electric and the Tata Altroz EV. Alongside better government support and improving charging infrastructure, these new additions will likely help green cars sustain their steep upward growth trajectory.
