The 2023 Nexon is the latest Tata product to receive a facelift, bringing big changes to its design and features. And with prices ranging between Rs 8.09 lakh and Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom), we couldn't help but draw parallels between it and the smallest SUV with a Tata badge – the Punch.
The mid-spec Pure S petrol MT Nexon, priced at Rs 10.19 lakh (ex-showroom), is just Rs 10,000 more expensive than the Punch’s top-spec Creative Flagship AMT DT trim, which retails at Rs 10.09 lakh. So we compare the two on the basis of their dimensions, features and powertrains.

No surprises here, as the Nexon is clearly the bigger car. So naturally, you get better road presence and more space inside the Nexon’s cabin at the same time. That said, compact vehicles do have their own perks, especially in the city. In fact, the Punch actually manages to keep up (almost) with the Nexon in terms of height and boot space, but does lose out significantly on other parameters.

On the face of it, the top-spec Tata Punch offers almost all the feel-good features you’ll want and need from your vehicle. Even though the Pure S Nexon almost matches it, the Punch’s cabin will be the one for you if you’re looking for creature comforts.
But in terms of safety, the Nexon offers six airbags and hill-hold assist over the Punch, and both these features are offered as standard. That said, while the Punch packs a rear wiper/washer, a tyre pressure monitoring system, and a rear defogger over the Nexon Pure S.

Both the Punch and 2023 Nexon come with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, but the nature of those engines is different. While the Punch’s unit breathes naturally, the Nexon employs forced induction, thanks to its turbocharged nature. As a result, the Nexon’s unit produces more power and torque. And yet, the Punch is also slightly more frugal to run, with a slightly better fuel efficiency figure.
The Nexon’s unit can also be paired with a 5-speed MT in the base-spec trim and a 6-speed MT or a 7-speed DCT in the higher trims. Apart from its 5-speed MT, the Punch only gets the AMT as an automatic option.
The top-spec Tata Punch does offer you enough kit to keep you and your family happy. So if you don’t mind sacrificing a bit of cabin space and want a compact yet butch-looking vehicle, the Punch should be your pick.

But if you value road presence, in-cabin space, and better performance over creature comforts, then the Nexon Pure S – with its chic styling and interior – won’t let you down one bit.
