Toyota has decided to give the brawny Hilux pick-up the sportier Gazoo Racing (Toyota’s motorsport division) treatment in Japan with a new GR Sport trim. Sure, it ain’t a hardcore GR model, but it’s got enough updates to consider it as an equivalent to a Hyundai N Line offering, for instance.
So what’s changed with the Hilux GR Sport? For starters, the front grille gets a new mesh and a large ‘Toyota’ badge in the middle. The wheel arches are now body coloured, and the wheels are new blacked-out 18-inch units. GR Sport badges, red front calipers and black rear calipers make up the design changes.
Inside, you get synthetic leather upholstery for the seats, a bit of red contrast stitching, aluminium pedals, metallic paddle shifters, a GR branded steering wheel, as well as a GR themed instrument cluster unit. The rest of the cabin remains unchanged to the standard model.
Under the hood, the Hilux GR Sport remains mechanically unchanged, running a 2.4-litre diesel engine that pushes 150PS and 400Nm. It is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission that distributes power to all four wheels.
Back home, our sources suggest the standard Hilux pick-up is under consideration for a launch in India and it could be locally assembled. The Hilux could be priced around Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom), and will rival the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross, which is priced from Rs 19.98 lakh to Rs 24.49 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
