The SUV sold in the Rainbow Nation gets a different name and minor styling differentiators

  • Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is called just the Urban Cruiser in South Africa.
  • It gets blacked out alloys and an all-black interior theme.
  • Doesn’t get niceties such as the ventilated seats and panoramic sunroof that are offered here.
  • Features include 7-inch infotainment, cruise control and up to six airbags.
  • Powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine, paired with either 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.

Toyota has launched the Urban Cruiser Hyryder in South Africa. And like any other model, the SUV sold there gets a couple of changes over the India-spec model. First things first, it drops the Hyryder nametag and is called just the Urban Cruiser there, which in India was used for the Brezza-based sub-4 metre SUV.

In terms of styling, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder sold in South Africa gets one exterior styling change over the India-spec model. It rolls on the same set of alloys, albeit blacked out that looks sporty. Rest of the exterior design is exactly the same as the India-spec model.

On the inside, the dashboard layout and design is exactly the same as the India-spec model, but it comes finished in an all-black hue. But the bigger fact is that the South Africa-spec Urban Cruiser doesn’t get all the niceties you get here, such as the larger 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, ventilated front seats and even the panoramic sunroof.

But still, as a package, it does get all the necessities including a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, cruise control, keyless entry with push button start and a multi-info display. On the safety front, it gets up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control and rear parking camera with sensors.

With the South Africa-spec model, you don’t get either all-wheel drive or a strong-hybrid powertrain. Instead, you get a 105PS 1.5-litre petrol engine, paired with either a 5-speed manual or Maruti Suzuki’s older 4-speed automatic transmission. The Hyryder sold in India gets a 6-speed auto ‘box.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser is priced from R 329,400 (Rs 14.78 lakh approx.) in the Rainbow Nation. In India, the SUV is priced from Rs 10.73 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up against models such as the Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda KushaqHyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and soon-to-be-launched Citroen C3 Aircross.
