A Toyota thing

Hybrids have been Toyota’s thing for a while and the marque is building on that statement by offering its first compact SUV in the country with a strong-hybrid powertrain. The technology is mated to a three-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine and the power unit produces a combined output of 116PS and is mated to an e-CVT.

The Hyryder also gets a mild-hybrid powertrain paired to a four-cylinder (103PS) 1.5-litre petrol mill, geared using a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. An all-wheel drivetrain will also be available, but only with the mild-hybrid unit. The mild-hybrid tech has been derived from Maruti, while the self-charging powertrain has been jointly developed by the two carmakers.

Abundant features

Toyota has left no stone unturned in the features department as it has equipped the Hyryder with a plethora of goodies. The list includes a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless phone charger, head-up display, 17-inch alloy wheels, a 360-degree camera, connected car technology, ventilated front seats, digital driver display and a panoramic sunroof. Passenger safety is kept in check with six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS with EBD and hill-hold assist.

The Toyota Hyryder slots into a segment that is one of – if not the most– competitive in the country at the moment. With rivals like MG Astor, Hyundai Creta, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, the Toyota Hyryder has its work cut out, but it stands out while doing so thanks to the unique strong-hybrid powertrain.
