Toyota is under the spotlight but for the wrong reasons. The carmaker has issued a press release stating that certain diesel-powered models in its lineup have been affected by power delivery discrepancies while undergoing domestic emissions testing in Japan.
Three diesel engines have been affected as per the investigation: the 2.4-litre (Innova Crysta), 2.8-litre (Hilux and Fortuner) and 3.3-litre (Land Cruiser) units. All these cars are on sale in India and the sad news is yes, the vehicles here and the ones using these engines globally have all been affected.
That said, Toyota states that these cars are still roadworthy and you can continue to use them on a daily basis.
During the testing phase of these engines, they were fitted with a different ECU and software that apparently made the “values appear smoother with less variation.” However, the final mass-produced versions came with a different ECU. Toyota was quick to add that they tested the final versions of the engines to continue to meet performance output standards, but not similar to how it was showcased to the authorities during the testing phase.

Toyota will temporarily suspend the shipping of these engines and models until further notice. Plus, the Japanese marque said it will provide explanations to the authorities and will be more than happy to re-test these engines for the same, in front of witnesses if needed to.

A spokesperson from Toyota India commented that “The irregularities concern the ‘smoothing’ of power and torque curves but did not lead to any over-stating or over-claims on horsepower, torque or other powertrain-related values. Moreover, this does not have any impact on the emissions or safety of the affected vehicles.
Toyota is working with relevant authorities to re-confirm the data used for the certification of the affected vehicles. As such, in case of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd (TKM), the dispatch of affected vehicles will also be temporarily suspended.
However, new order taking will continue. For cars that have already been dispatched but have not yet been delivered to the customer, we will carefully explain to our customers about this condition. Thereafter, we will proceed with registration and delivery for customers who opt to receive their vehicles.”
So yes, all the affected customers of the aforementioned models will have to wait a tad longer until Toyota brings out a solution to fix them as sales will be halted temporarily. But the carmaker has reiterated that these cars are roadworthy and can be continued to use on a daily basis. Also, if your car has reached dealerships and you’re waiting to take delivery, you can do so even if they are affected.
