The MPV’s ZX and ZX(O) variants are offered with a strong-hybrid powertrain and get the most number of features

  • Toyota will temporarily halt orders for the Hycross’ ZX and ZX(O) variants from April 8.

  • The ZX and ZX(O) get premium features such as powered second-row seats and driver-assistance tech (ADAS).

  • Meanwhile, all the other petrol and hybrid variants are still available to order.

  • Deliveries for the MPV are already underway and it’s priced from Rs 18.55 lakh (ex-showroom).

Almost all carmakers are having a hard time getting vehicles to their customers amid the ongoing global crises that have affected the automotive industry’s supply chain. It seems that this problem has caught up with Toyota as well, affecting the newly launched Innova Hycross. The carmaker will temporarily stop taking bookings for select higher-spec variants of the MPV.

The upper two ZX and top-spec ZX(O) trim levels will be unavailable to order from tomorrow, April 8, 2023. Meanwhile, the lower and mid-spec trims – G, GX, VX and VX(O) – will continue to be available to book.

Lower variants still available to order

“Owing to the ongoing supply challenges, we deeply regret to announce the temporary halt of bookings for top end grades of Innova Hycross i.e., ZX and ZX (O) only, with effect from 8th April 2023. The bookings of the other grades of Innova Hycross both the hybrid and gasoline will continue. We are doing our best to resume the Innova Hycross bookings for the said variants at the earliest.” – Toyota Kirloskar Motor

The Toyota Innova’s G and GX variants are ICE-only, powered by a 174PS, 2-litre naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engine paired with an automatic transmission. The VX, VX(O), ZX and ZX(O) are the strong-hybrid variants, with a 186PS (combined) output and a fuel economy of 21.1kmpl (claimed).

Of these variants, the VX and VX(O) hybrid as well as ICE-only G and GX can still be booked after April 8.

Why are only the top trims affected?

Globally, semiconductor shortage has been a contributing factor in the ongoing supply chain issues. It affects the production of electronic components, which is unfortunate for a feature-loaded, all-new vehicle such as the Innova Hycross that gets the highest number of electronic features of any previous Innova.

Here’s what the ZX trim packs:

  • DRLs with integrated turn signals

  • 18-inch alloy wheels

  • Powered second row Ottoman seats

  • Ventilated front seats

  • Powered tailgate

  • Eight-way powered driver seat with memory function

  • Nine-speaker JBL audio system

The top ZX(O) trim-level only adds one feature to the ZX variant’s equipment list – a full suite of driver-assistance functions. These include lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, auto high beam (adaptive headlights) and forward collision avoidance.

Most of these features are operated by complex electronic systems that use semiconductors. In other words, the ZX and ZX(O) trim levels are hit hardest by the supply chain issues.

If you’re looking to buy the Toyota Innova Hycross for its premium features and ADAS, it makes sense to wait until the top trim levels become available again. Otherwise, the available lower and mid-spec variants still offer decent kit alongside ICE and hybrid powertrain options.

The Innova Hycross retails from Rs 18.55 lakh onwards (ex-showroom). It offers a step-up over people movers such as the Kia Carens, Mahindra Marazzo, and the Toyota Innova Crysta; and a less pricey alternative to the Kia Carnival
