The partnership between TVS Motor Company and BMW Motorrad has been pretty successful so far. While both parties faced their fair share of initial troubles, their 310cc products now are really likeable and exciting. And now, these two parties are extending their ties to more platforms, including electric mobility.
While the release doesn’t exactly state what sort of products are to be expected going forwards, the intent is to “develop common platforms by mutually tapping the emerging technologies in the future mobility space, keeping in mind the global requirements of customer segments in various markets.” Sounds pretty vague but this could mean jointly developing flex fuel motors, hybrid powerplants and, of course, electric products.
We think electrics could be the first of the new, jointly-developed platforms by the two companies. Despite already having the iQube Electric and CE 04, the two parties could be working on an electric motorcycle platform, which would be the equivalent of a conventional 200cc motorcycle.
“Exclusive products for both companies will be developed on these common platforms, and the companies will retail their products globally.” This line in the press statement leads us to believe that just like the 310cc models, the new platform will also have models that will not be competing with each other directly. The possibility of a naked, an adventure and a supersport arriving from this platform is quite high.
“The first product through this cooperation will be showcased in the next 24 months.” This timeline is quite pleasing to hear and it matches with something that TVS top boss Sudarshan Venu had stated regarding new electric products in July. The timeline is still far away, thus allowing TVS and BMW Motorrad to also gauge the response that Ultraviolette, the electric startup receiving a fresh dose of funding recently, gains for its F77. The learnings will be incorporated into the new BMW-TVS products and will help the electric space boom.
