Chakan plant’s engine shop has crossed 3.8 lakh production milestone for made-in-India engines over 10 years
Volkswagen and Skoda really hit it home with their India 2.0 strategy. Call it a second wind, a revival or just simply brilliant strategy, there’s no denying the fact that the MQB-A0-IN platform, developed specially for India while maintaining European standards, has worked out well for the group. Its success is reflected by the success of the brands as they cross the 15 lakh production milestone in India!
Yes, the VW and Skoda group has now produced over 15 lakh units combined at its Chakan plant near Pune. Their journey started with the Skoda Fabia premium hatchback as the first vehicle that rolled off the production line in 2009.
That production line has seen some legends throughout its time, from the likes of the fabled Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Rapid to the new-age models like the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Virtus. The new India 2.0 models have in fact played a significant role in expediting the process as they account for more than 3 lakh of the total units produced. In fact, 30 percent of the current production output is for export to over 40 countries, further highlighting the standards and capabilities of the Chakan production line.
There’s another production milestone being celebrated back at the plant, and that comes in the form of 3.8 lakh locally made engines, as the ‘Engine Shop’ completed its 10th anniversary.
