Today, Lamborghini is known for making exotic, ultra-expensive supercars that make you drool with envy at every sight. But that image has come from a legacy of consistently delivering on the promise of one man who decided to build a sports car that he liked. Ferruccio Lamborghini isn’t talked about much even in automotive circles, but a new movie based on his life is coming out on November 18. It’s called ‘Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend’ and here’s its trailer:
“Let me make cars. You stick to making tractors.” – Enzo Ferrari
Yep, that’s real – Lamborghini supercars exist because of Ferrari’s famous rejection of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s offer for business collaboration. Lamborghini, an engineer and well-heeled business owner himself, came up with his first car, the Lamborghini 350 GT, just four months later. How he managed that is another story, but we’ll abstain from narrating it since it might be a spoiler for many.
Instead, let’s talk about his early life. Ferruccio was born in a family of wine growers in 1916, but he wasn’t as keen on farming as he was on farming machinery. He worked as a mechanic, being recruited in the air force in 1940 during the second world war. After the war, he opened a car workshop and began modifying his own car. He also built tractors in his spare time to sell during the post-war agricultural growth in Italy. The business endeavour was successful, and he was soon able to build the tractor manufacturer Lamborghini Trattori.
Business continued to flourish and Ferrucio Lamborghini was able to buy himself a Ferrari – a 250 GT. But he wasn’t happy with what was a top-dollar ‘supercar’ in its day (and remains one of the most expensive collector’s cars today) because of its clutch that needed frequent repairs.

If you’d like to know more about the hardworking engineer and entrepreneur’s life, the movie comes out in two weeks on November 18. It’s directed by Bobby Moresco (known for ‘Crash’ and ‘Million Dollar Baby’), starring Frank Grillo as Ferruccio Lamborghini. On a side note, Enzo Ferrari’s biopic is also in the making and is set to arrive in 2023.
