Formula 1, also known as F1, is the pinnacle of motorsports. It represents the zenith of not just dynamic ability on four wheels, but also management and planning that goes into running a Formula 1 team week in week out. Admittedly, our line of work sees a lot of outlandish cars making their way to our office for various reasons, but nothing will EVER beat the RB14 race-winning Formula 1 car that competed in the 2018 season dropping by for a quick visit on Saturday.

Yes, though it over got off its trailer bed, we had a full fledged Formula 1 car, driven by either Max Verstappen or Daniel Ricciardo, in all its glory, right in front of us. So our editor, Ameya Dandekar, took this once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity to preach a little about what makes these Formula 1 cars as safe as they are.
The 2018 season marked the introduction of an important safety feature called the halo, which defines exactly what F1 stands for - constant development and improvement in all areas including emissions, safety and what not. Watch the reel below to fathom exactly how critical this feature was, as the world of Formula 1 found out through rather unfortunate circumstances.
While the halo is a relatively recent development for improving the safety aspect of a Formula 1 car, we sometimes tend to take the usual equipment for granted. If you aren’t an avid follower of the show, you might not know a Formula 1 car doesn’t get half the electronic aids (ABS, traction control, etc) that are present in mass-market vehicles. Yet, they can absorb tremendous impacts while keeping the driver safe at speeds that us mortals wouldn't even be able to comprehend. Here’s our resident editor reiterating the same:
Fun fact: Max Verstappen suffered a 51G impact during his crash at Silverstone. To put how insane that number is in perspective: an astronaut plummeting into space experiences a "meagre" 3.2Gs.

So, Formula 1 cars don’t just represent the apogee of motorsports in terms of speed and lap times, but also safety, which paves the way for other motorsports to follow. Also, the learnings derived from Formula 1 campaigns are frequently implemented onto road-going cars – that is if the team has a division that makes road-going cars for the masses. So, at the end of the day, all the development and work isn’t just for the sake of entertainment, it epitomises a win-win situation for all.
