The 5-door Mahindra Thar Roxx is finally here in India. With new styling cues, revised interiors, more features and a better safety package, the Thar nameplate has never been more appealing to the masses. It won’t be considered as an outright ‘selfish buy’ anymore as it won’t ask your family to do olympic-level gymnastics to get into the rear seat.

But, is the Thar Roxx accommodating for tall passengers? Can it seat them back to back? We find the answer to these questions in our Instagram reel below, by making Tushar Kamath, our Associate Editor, a 6’5’’ giant, sit behind his own driving position.

As you can see, Tushar did somehow manage to sit in the rear seat behind his own driving position, but his knees didn’t fit behind the seat back. He had to place his knees around the seats to be able to sit there. So the Thar Roxx can’t seat 6’5’’ tall people back to back, but then, which car can? Do let us know in the comments.

What we can say is that the Thar Roxx has enough room to accommodate two 6 footers back to back. We made our Editor, Ameya Dandekar (6 feel tall), sit behind his own driving position and he had enough leg room to spare. As for the headroom, it was plenty, not just for Ameya but also for Tushar.

Thar Roxx overview

The Thar Roxx comes with new features for the nameplate, and its highlight creature comforts include 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof, a 9-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a wireless phone charger, cruise control, and ventilated front seats. 

Its safety kit is hefty and comprises a 360-degree camera, 6 airbags (standard), ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, hill-descent control, front and rear parking sensors, and ADAS features. The latter is a Level-2 system with functionalities such as blind spot monitor, lane keep assist, and auto emergency braking.

The Thar Roxx continues to get both petrol and diesel engines, but they have now been uprated. The 2-litre turbo-petrol produces 162 PS /330 Nm with the 6-speed MT and 177 PS/380 Nm with the 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is available in two states of tune: 152 PS/330 Nm and 175 PS/370 Nm. But the latter is limited to the 6-speed AT four-wheel drive variants. The 152 PS engine can be had with both manual and automatic transmissions. The petrol engine can’t be had with the four-wheel drivetrain, but you can get both rear- and four-wheel drivetrain with the diesel engine.

Mahindra is yet to reveal the prices for the 4WD variant of the Thar Roxx, but they have divulged the range for the RWD trims, which range between Rs 12.99 lakh and Rs 20.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Test drives will commence from September 14 onwards and you can book it starting from October 3. And deliveries for the off-roader are set to commence from Dussehra, which falls on October 12. 

It rivals the Force 5-door and is a larger alternative to the Maruti Jimny. For similar pricing, you can also consider the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos as well as the Tata Harrier and MG Hector.
