Sports cars….each and every car enthusiast would like to own one regardless of what make or type it is. We’ve the Germans, Americans and Italians, all making epic sports cars that put a smile on the face of the person piloting them and those listening to the glorious noise their performance engines make.
Now, although India is one of the world’s largest automotive markets, weirdly, if you look at the scenario, there’s no single sports car, except for the now dead DC Avanti, made in India by an Indian automotive brand.
Now, Chat GPT is slowly becoming popular globally and we thought it would be interesting to get to know the AI’s opinion on why there are no Indian-made sports cars on sale today. And the reply, which we weren’t expecting, was surprisingly upright and, if we were honest, slightly ’in-your-face’ as well.

Lastly, there is currently not much of a market for sports cars in India. The demand for high-performance vehicles in India is relatively low compared to other countries. Most consumers prefer affordable, fuel-efficient cars that are suitable for daily use. Thus, developing a sports car in India would be a risky proposition for automotive manufacturers.
In conclusion, while there are several factors that have prevented the development of an Indian sports car, the country's growing automotive industry and changing consumer preferences could potentially lead to the creation of such a vehicle in the future.”

The first paragraph regarding the development and investments is absolutely right. And for manufacturers to recuperate their money after a big investment for a low volume product, in a market like India where mass market models rule, will be a no-no until and unless it is exported globally.
The second para, for testing purposes, is an area we are seeing changes being made. The Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida is a great testing base and luxury carmakers even host performance car events there.

Then we have the Natrax high speed testing facility, where you can push a car to its absolute limits. And lastly, expressway connectivity is booming between mass market cities, the perfect place to check how these cars are as highway cruisers.
And the last para, there’s no need to debate here, as the first question that comes to most Indian minds before even seeing the car is… you know it… ‘Kitna Deti Hai?’
So overall, the AI has given us a response which is quite upright and factually correct. That said, we do hope to see India-made sports cars in the EV era as their skateboard platforms allow for easier development than an ICE model, since the base for all them are relatively similar. Wouldn’t you like to see some sports cars coming from our Indian biggies Tata and Mahindra? It’d be so cool!
