The production-spec Yamaha E01 maxi electric scooter has been spotted in Japan, where the company had given the e-scooters to media publications for a test ride. The E01 Concept debuted back in 2019 at the Tokyo Motor Show, and then in May 2021, the patent drawings of the production version surfaced online.
The camouflaged test mule looks pretty much similar to the concept version. The twin apron-mounted LED headlights look R1-esque, and the setup is complemented by a windshield. Unlike the curvy seat that merges with the bodywork in the concept, the unit in the test mule looks more conventional. The sleek tail section is complemented by a tyre-hugger-integrated license plate holder, also in line with the concept.
The Yamaha E01 electric scooter is powered by an air-cooled DC brushless motor linked to a fixed lithium-ion battery and a belt final drive. It will likely offer a range of around 80km. Going by the information in the instrument cluster, the e-scooter will have multiple riding modes, and we expect smartphone connectivity to be available in the final model. That said, the LCD console may not get things like turn-by-turn navigation. Other notable features include all-LED lighting, keyless operation, and an apron-mounted multi-function switch.
The scooter rolls on 13-inch alloys wrapped in road-biased rubber. It is linked to a telescopic front fork and twin rear shock absorbers, with disc at both ends aided by dual-channel ABS. Expect Yamaha to launch the production-spec E01 in mid 2021 in Europe and Japan, followed by other markets.
That said, this electric scooter is unlikely to come to India as it will be too expensive for what it will offer. We hope Yamaha comes up with something specific for the Indian market later this year to take on the Ather 450X, Ola S1 Pro and the Simple One.
