Toyota is back in the game of premium sedans, with their newly launched 2024 Camry. The Japanese automaker previously also offered the Prius sedan in India, but the model was discontinued long back. The new generation of the Prius has now been launched in its home and global markets but hasn’t made its way to India.
Both these premium Toyotas are well-equipped with a set of advanced features and comfortable interiors. While we hope for the Prius to return to Indian roads, it’s intriguing to compare the Camry with its international-spec Prius counterpart for now. Let’s dive in!
The ninth-generation Toyota Camry has been launched in India in a single variant, priced at Rs 48 lakh (ex-showroom). A direct comparison with the Prius isn’t feasible, as it is no longer available for sale in India. However, for reference, the international-spec Prius is priced from approximately Rs 23.7 lakh (ex-showroom), while the international version of the Camry starts at around Rs 23.4 lakh (ex-showroom).

When it comes to features, both premium Toyota sedans offer a comparable list with numerous similarities. However, the new-generation Camry outdoes the international-spec Prius in several aspects.
the automobile community
The Camry gets a larger digital driver’s display, a head-up display, leather upholstery, a more practical sunroof, an additional speaker, more adjustments for the powered driver’s seat, rear reclining functionality, ambient lighting, three-zone climate control, and a rear defogger — all of which are absent in the Prius. For safety, it brings an extra airbag. The Prius in comparison is also quite well-loaded and it gets larger alloy wheels than the Camry.

Both sedans are equipped with hybrid powertrain setups, but the new Camry features a more powerful 2.5-litre hybrid engine, delivering significantly higher output compared to the Prius. Both cars are paired with an electric continuously variable transmission (e-CVT).
The Prius is available with both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations, while the Camry in India is offered exclusively with a front-wheel-drive setup. However, the Camry does come with an all-wheel-drive option in the U.S. market. If we see the Prius arriving in India, Toyota might follow a similar approach as done with the Camry.
In conclusion, both sedans aim to establish themselves as mass-produced premium hybrid cars, particularly in the Indian context. What are your thoughts on these hybrid vehicles? Would you choose the new Camry, or would you rather wait and hope for the Prius to make its return to India? Let us know!
