The new Swift broke cover in concept form at the Japan Mobility Show and has now been spotted testing in India on multiple occasions as well

It’s an exciting time whenever a new Maruti Swift comes along. And this one, which broke cover as a concept at the recent Japan Mobility Show, seems more production-ready than a concept. That is further iterated by the fact that test mules have started popping up, racking up testing miles on our shores. So here’s a deep dive into the new Swift ahead of its India reveal sometime early next year.

Fancy a budget Mini Cooper, anyone? With the design revisions made to the new Swift, one can’t help but draw parallels between it and a Mini Cooper, with their similar roofline and stance. The main body of the new Swift looks wider – more substantial than its roof and windowline. The front looks sharper with new headlights and revised LED DRL signature. They rest below the pronounced bonnet line and almost flank the redesigned grille, which looks to have shrunk in size.

The most apparent change in profile is the repositioning of the rear door handles, which have moved from the C-pillar to a more conventional position. The rear retains the essence of the Swift, with a similar outline for the tailgate, headlights and the bumper. However, the styling cues within those parts have been revised, prominent among them the inverted C-shaped LED motif within the taillights.

The new Swift gets a complete overhaul on the inside with a similar treatment as the Fronx and Baleno. The design is similar to a certain extent, but does feature a few exclusive bits to the dashboard. There’s also a new black and white theme on offer, however, this could vary in the India-spec model.

Feature wise, it packs a nine-inch touchscreen system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The driver gets a MID display flanked by analog dials while other features include cruise control, steering-mounted buttons, push-button start/stop and automatic AC.

Apart from the usual safety kit, the new-gen Swift also gets a bunch of ADAS features including autonomous braking assist, automatic high beam assist, and more. And considering that the test mule in India was spotted with blindspot monitoring in one of the spy images, we won’t rule out this feature for our shores as well.

Big changes continue under the hood of the new Swift as it loses out on a cylinder. It now gets a new 3-cylinder Z-Series unit, which retains its 1.2-litre engine capacity. Exact output specifications haven’t been revealed, but we suspect the new naturally aspirated engine to retain similar power numbers of the outgoing four-cylinder engine while delivering better fuel economy. Japan will also get a hybrid powertrain option and an all-wheel drive setup, both of which won’t make it to India.

In Japan, this engine will be paired with a CVT gearbox. However, for India, you can expect it to come with a manual transmission. it remains to be seen whether the new Swift gets a CVT or an AMT as its automatic option.

It is likely that the new-gen Maruti Swift will break cover sooner rather than later, considering that testing is already underway. Expect it to command a premium over the current model, which is priced between Rs 5.99 lakh and Rs 9.03 lakh (ex-showroom). It’ll continue to rival the likes of the Tata Punch, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, and be a hatchback alternative to the Renault Triber.
