The premium hybrid people mover will become Maruti’s flagship vehicle in India, slotting above the Grand Vitara compact SUV

  • Toyota Innova Hycross-derived Maruti MPV is expected by August 2023.

  • Will be the second strong-hybrid offering from the carmaker in India.

  • Maruti already offers the Ertiga and XL6 MPVs; the Innova-derived model will be a more premium offering.

  • Likely to get driver-assistance tech, a first for Maruti in India.

We were one of the first to report that Maruti has been working on its own version of the Toyota Innova Hycross. We can now confirm that the people mover will be unveiled by August 2023, becoming Maruti’s flagship and unsurprisingly, its most expensive product in the Indian market.

The premium MPV will slot above the existing Ertiga and XL6 MPVs, with larger overall dimensions, more premium features and a higher seating capacity of seven to eight people.

Maruti’s flagship MPV: what to expect

The Maruti MPV will not be a completely re-bodied model, but likely closely related to its Toyota counterpart. So, you can expect the upcoming people mover to feature distinct design elements to set itself apart from the Toyota Innova Hycross, especially at the front and rear. It could also have distinctive alloy wheels and a colour palette similar to other Nexa models, since the premium MPV will be sold at the Maruti’s Nexa outlets.

Inside, it should offer the same premium equipment as the Innova Hycross, including a panoramic sunroof, 10.1-inch touchscreen, ventilated front seats and reclining second row seats. However, like their previous collaborations, you can expect Maruti’s version to have distinctive colour schemes.

It’s not far-fetched to think that the MPV will get a 360-degree camera (various Maruti models already have this feature), but importantly, it could get the Toyota MPV’s driver-assistance tech. This would make the Innova Hycross-derived MPV the first Maruti car in India to get ADAS, including features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and forward collision prevention.

To get strong-hybrid powertrain

Maruti’s version of the Innova Hycross should retain the MPV’s powerful 2-litre petrol engine as well. In the Hycross, the petrol engine is available in an ICE-only configuration with 174PS and as a strong-hybrid with 186PS. Both the engines are paired with a CVT and drive the front wheels.

The premium Maruti MPV’s arrival is expected in mid-2023, so we don’t expect to see it at Auto Expo 2023. That said, Maruti is bringing a slew of other hotly anticipated vehicles to the expo ahead of the MPV’s unveiling. When launched, Maruti’s version of the Innova will lock horns with the Kia Carnival as well as its donor model, the Innova Hycross.
