None of the previous generations of the MPV came with a sunroof, let alone a panoramic one
  • Leaked patent image shows the overall silhouette of the new MPV.

  • Will come packing a panoramic sunroof, a first for any Innova.

  • India debut likely to happen after global unveiling.

  • To run a strong-hybrid petrol powertrain instead of a diesel unit.

  • The new generation MPV could be priced from around Rs 20 lakh.

The Toyota Innova Hycross has been popping up in the news a lot recently. This time it’s an official patent image of the MPV that has been leaked, grabbing everyone’s attention as it sports a slot for a panoramic sunroof – a first for the Innova.

Design

Thanks to the image, we’ve got a better look at the MPV’s silhouette, albeit in a bare metal form. The space for housing the panoramic sunroof grabs attention right off the bat, and as revealed by the teaser before, the nose features sleek LED headlamps that flank the trapezoidal grille. There are connecting triangular elements beneath the grille, likely for housing the fog lamps.

In profile, the design looks clean, apart from a couple of creases, one at the rear doors extending towards the taillights, and one near the lower side, between the front and rear doors.

A bunch of firsts

Apart from the panoramic sunroof, the new generation MPV will ditch the tried and tested diesel engine in favour of a cleaner petrol-hybrid power unit, which will power the front wheels instead of the rear. The strong-hybrid unit will likely be paired with a 2-litre petrol motor and combined, there should be 190PS on tap.

Another first for the MPV is the adoption of a monocoque platform instead of a ladder-on-frame construction which has been the case for all the previous-generation models. A petrol-only powertrain is also expected to be on offer for the base trims.

The Innova Hycross will be sold alongside the current Innova Crysta. Toyota is likely to price the MPV in the ballpark of Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom), making it a premium alternative to the Kia Carens and Mahindra Marazzo
