MG’s stall at Auto Expo 2023 has been bustling with the launch of the facelifted Hector and Hector Plus and the unveiling of 4 electric hatchback. Alongside these three cars is an interesting reveal: the eHS. It’s basically a premium midsize SUV that gets a greener and kinder plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The MG eHS has styling elements mimicking the Astor SUV. For instance, the eHS’ large front grille that merges onto the headlamps are slightly enlarged versions of the Astor. In profile, the SUV has a soft flowing shoulder line that forms a haunch above the rear wheels. Even the sleek dual-tone alloys give the SUV a nice stance. At the rear, the split LED taillamps round off the overall clean design of the SUV.
Inside, the eHS gets a layered all-black dashboard with a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and a 10.1-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system. Physical buttons can be found on the dashboard, flanking the gear lever for all the important functions. Meanwhile, parts like the steering wheels and circular AC vents are similar to the Astor.
In terms of features, the eHS gets dual-zone climate control, connected car tech, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, and powered tailgate. Passenger safety is taken care of by multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and a full suite of ADAS features.
The eHS combines a 160PS 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with a 122PS electric motor to develop a combined output of 258PS. The electric motor is paired to a 16.6kWh battery pack and promises an electric-only driving range of 52km (WLTP-claimed). It’s also quite quick, covering the 0-100kmph run in 6.9 seconds.
The MG eHS has been displayed at Auto Expo for evaluation, meaning the carmaker is gauging customer response for India launch. And at an expected price of around Rs 25 lakh, the SUV will go against the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson, and Citroen C5 Aircross.
