MG debuted the new Astor at the Auto Expo 2025
Features a new-look design
Interior gets a revamp with newer tech
Powered by a strong-hybrid powertrain
India launch expected later this year
The new MG ZS HEV, also called the Astor in India, was recently unveiled at the ongoing Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. It was showcased alongside the new Majestor, MG 9, and Cyberster. While the carmaker has not confirmed the SUV’s market launch, it is expected to arrive by the end of this year. Here is what to expect from the India-spec MG ZS HEV could offer when it goes on sale.
The new MG ZS Hybrid+ (known in western markets) has received a complete makeover with what seems to be a more matured look. It features a contemporary and sharper look thanks to the cuts and creases, an upright face with a larger grille, slightly swept-up beltline, an almost flat roofline, and new sleeker headlamps with a connecting bar that spans the edge of the bonnet. The new model is also equipped with a fresh set of 18-inch alloy wheels.
It has considerably grown in size, now measuring 4,430 mm long, 1,818 mm wide, and 1,635 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,610 mm. However, the boot space has decreased slightly from 448 litres to 443 litres.
In line with the exterior, which takes inspiration from the latest MG3, HS, and MG4, the interior also adopts a fresh layout. The cabin now features fewer physical buttons, new displays, hexagonal-pattern air-con vents, and a new steering wheel. The cabin has an all-black theme with leather upholstery for seats that the India-bound model may offer.
MG has bestowed the new ZS HEV with numerous features that are also likely to make their way to India. Notable features include a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch driver display, powered driver’s seat with lumbar support, 3 driving modes, and 6 speakers. Whereas, it offers a range of safety features, such as 6 airbags, hill hold assist, hill descent control, electronic stability programme (ESP), tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and a 360-degree camera. Also on offer is ADAS with 13 functions.
As the name suggests, the new ZS HEV comes powered by a new 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that debuted with the MG3. This unit makes 102 PS and 128 Nm, while an electric motor paired with a 1.83 kWh battery pack produces 136 PS and 250 Nm. The strong-hybrid system generates a combined output of 196 PS and 465 Nm. As a result, it can go from 0 to 100 kmph in 8.7 seconds and provides a top speed of 168 kmph.
Currently, the MG Astor is priced between Rs 9.98 lakh and Rs 18.07 (ex-showroom). Given that the new model is likely to be priced higher. Once launched, it will continue to rival the Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Hyundai Creta, Tata Curvv, Citroen Basalt, Volkswagen Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq.
Since its market introduction in 2021, MG has not introduced any major updates or a mid-life facelifts for the Astor, apart from occasional nip-and-tuck once in a blue moon, including special edition versions. However, the generational update brings a fresh breath of air in the form of significant changes across the board, including a new self-charging hybrid powertrain. Above all, it is also possible that the ZS HEV or ZS Hybrid+ will retain its original name in the Indian market.
