Toyota will be unveiling a prototype of its BS6 Phase 2-complaint flex fuel hybrid prototype on August 29, which will most likely be the Toyota Camry. This flex fuel vehicle is Toyota’s step towards carbon neutrality and will be unveiled by Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways.

Nitin Gadkari recently addressed a conference where he stated, “I will be launching a flex fuel-based Toyota car on August 29.” Later in that conference he also said, “This vehicle from Toyota will run on 100 percent bioethanol fuel, using which it can generate 40 per cent electricity for its strong hybrid system.”

Trivia

Gadkari added that the price of ethanol is Rs 60 per litre and this car can give a mileage of 15 to 20kmpl. This would make it much more affordable than petrol, which currently retails at around Rs 120.

Previous Projects

The Union government and Toyota partnered up in early 2022 and Nitin Gadkari flagged off Toyota’s flex-fuel pilot project last year as well when the carmaker showcased a Toyota Corolla hybrid vehicle. Apart from Toyota, Maruti has also been working on flex-fuel vehicles and showcased a Wagon R prototype last year which could run on an 85 percent ethanol blend.

To move towards a carbon-neutral future, we need to shift from fossil fuel-based vehicles to cleaner hybrid and electric vehicles. Flex-fuel vehicles will also play a major role in making that transition, as they are more eco-friendly and the fuel cost is much more affordable as well.
