  • Toyota compact SUV D22 will be called the Hyryder as per our sources.
  • The Maruti counterpart of this SUV will boast differentiated styling touches.
  • It will have 1.5-litre mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid powertrains.
  • Will take primarily Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Big news today from Toyota India. The Japanese carmaker will take the wraps off the Hyryder, its upcoming Hyundai Creta challenger, on July 01. The subcompact SUV will be the first model in its segment to get a strong hybrid powertrain. Plus, this model will be shared with Maruti under Toyota and Suzuki’s joint venture.

Design of the upcoming Hyryder is still under wraps. That said, we do know that both SUVs will have unique identities with differentiating styling touches. So you can expect the Hyryder to boast Toyota’s design language, while the Maruti counterpart will be familiar with its own styling. That said, don’t expect the design changes to be as significant as say… the Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun.

Images of Maruti’s version of the Hyryder’s interior have surfaced online, giving us a fair idea of what to expect. The SUV boasted a large floating touchscreen infotainment system with sleek central AC vents underneath it. Apart from that, the SUV will boast a head-up display with controls to adjust its brightness and position.

Other notable features onboard should include connected car tech, automatic climate control, wireless phone charger, a sunroof, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, cruise control, and a powered driver’s seat. Safety should be taken care of by multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and ISOFIX.

The Hyryder’s highlight will be underneath the hood as it will get a strong hybrid powertrain, which includes a 1.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor. There will also be a mild-hybrid powertrain as well. Both engines will get automatic transmissions, while the mild-hybrid will get a stick shifter as well.

Prices of the upcoming Toyota SUV are expected to start from around Rs 10.5 lakh (ex-showroom), putting it in contention with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, VW Taigun, and MG Astor
