Toyota has taken the wraps off its latest offering for the Indian market, the Innova Hycross. And unlike the Crysta, the Hycross will offer you either a choice of a petrol or a strong-hybrid powertrain. There is no diesel engine option which might sound like a bummer, especially if you clock many miles. But Toyota has revealed some important ‘Kitna Deti Hai?’ numbers for the Hycross’ strong-hybrid powertrain, and they seem promising.
Before that, a quick word on the strong-hybrid engine. It’s a 2-litre unit teamed with an electric motor developing a combined output of 186PS. Drive is sent to the front wheels instead of the rear. Now to the main bit: what’s the fuel efficiency? Toyota claims the Hycross will be able to do 1097km on a tankful with a claimed fuel efficiency of 21.1kmpl. So basically, you can go from Bangalore to Mumbai (around 1000km) on a single tank of petrol.
For context, the Crysta diesel has a claimed mileage of up to 15.57kmpl, while that number goes down to a paltry 10.5kmpl for the petrol variants.
These are stellar numbers for a large MPV. Main due goes to the hybrid powertrain, where it’ll be driven in EV mode most of the time, especially in town. The Hycross also gets the choice of being driven in pure battery power, provided there is enough juice. But the proof in the pudding can be only found when we put the MPV through a proper road test, so stay tuned.
If you feel the hybrid powertrain might be a bit of a stretch, there is the choice of a 174PS 2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine as well. This unit drives the front wheels via a CVT. There is no manual ‘box offered with the Innova Hycross. Despite that setback, though, the Innova Hycross is much more upmarket and premium than its successor, as seen in our detailed image gallery.
Pre-launch bookings are underway for the Innova Hycross, and deliveries will commence in January. Prices are expected to be announced at Auto Expo 2023, and we suspect it could range between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom).
