The next-generation MPV will get a new engine that we haven’t seen in other Toyota models in India
  • New Toyota Innova to get a highly efficient naturally aspirated M20A petrol engine.

  • Will be offered with non-hybrid and strong-hybrid power unit choices.

  • Global reveal slated for November, India launch to follow soon after.

  • Prices are expected to start at around Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom).

As the global unveiling of the all-new Toyota Innova Hycross inches closer, new details about its specs and features have surfaced. The next-generation people mover will get an ICE petrol and a strong-hybrid power unit, with no diesel in sight.

Which engines will the new Innova Hycross get?

The new Innova Hycross will get neither the current Innova’s 150PS 2.4-litre diesel (which is temporarily discontinued) nor the 166PS 2.7-litre petrol engine. Instead, it’ll be powered by a new, highly efficient, naturally aspirated 2-litre petrol engine that’ll also be offered with an optional hybrid powertrain. This M20A engine is the next-generation version of Toyota’s 1.8-litre unit last seen in the Corolla Altis.

This engine is offered in other cars overseas, giving us an idea about the upcoming Innova Hycross MPV’s specs. The non-hybrid version of this engine is expected to produce 170PS and 202Nm.

Paired with a strong-hybrid system, the combined output should be similar to that of the Corolla hybrid that’s rated for 194PS. It is also expected to offer stellar fuel economy that won’t let you miss the diesel engine.

Both engines will be paired with an automatic gearbox only – the ICE drivetrain will have a CVT, while the strong-hybrid will get an e-CVT, the latter similar to the Toyota Hyryder SUV.

Toyota Innova Hycross to be an all-new MPV

The front-wheel drive, monocoque Innova Hycross is built from the ground up as a new people mover. While the current Innova is a rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame MPV, the new Hycross will be based on Toyota’s global TNGA platform. It’ll be all-new inside and out, equipped with features such as a panoramic sunroof and 360-degree camera.

The new Innova Hycross is shaping up to be an exciting new offering in the MPV segment in India. It’ll be sold alongside its predecessor, the Innova Crysta, slotting neatly between the Kia Carens/Mahindra Marazzo and Kia Carnival MPVs, with no direct competitors apart from similarly priced SUVs.
