1.5-litre mild-hybrid and segment-first strong hybrid petrol engines on offer with an AWD option for the former.
Series production is set to begin in August with a launch likely around September.
Prices are expected to start from Rs 10.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
With barely a week left for Toyota’s upcoming compact SUV, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, to break cover on July 01, the carmaker has officially teased the SUV for the first time via a short video. This compact SUV will also have a Maruti Suzuki counterpart, will be based on a Suzuki platform and will be manufactured at Toyota’s plant in Karnataka.
The teaser video gives us a glimpse of the muscular Glanza-like front grille which we saw in earlier leaks, with split-LED DRLs, a massive air dam, and a chrome strip splitting the DRLs. We also got a look at the side profile which showcased the ‘Hybrid’ badge on the front doors to denote its electrified stature. A small glimpse of the rear reveals wraparound tail lamps with a chrome strip joining dual inverted C-shaped LED light guides.
Earlier shots of the cabin confirmed a 9-inch Suzuki touchscreen infotainment system with the teaser video of the exterior also showcasing a 360-degree camera. It should also come with a wireless phone charger, head-up display, connected car tech and a sunroof.
The real highlight will be the two 1.5-litre hybrid powertrains on board. One is a 103PS mild-hybrid engine, while the other one is a segment-first 116PS strong hybrid setup. 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox options will be for the mild-hybrid engine; the strong hybrid will come with a e-CVT gearbox. It’ll be the mild-hybrid variants that’ll get an all-wheel drivetrain, while the strong hybrid Hyryder will have all its power distributed to the front wheels only.
Series production of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder will commence in August, and is being slated for exports to other markets including Africa alongside its Maruti Suzuki counterpart. Since production of the SUV begins in August, expect a launch around the same timeframe or in early September at prices starting from Rs 10.5 lakh (ex-showroom). The Toyota and Maruti SUVs will rival the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and the MG Astor.
