It's gotten such an extensive set of upgrades that you could consider it a middle ground between a facelift and a generation update

  • Gets a Camry-like front grille, and a different set of bumpers, headlights, DRLs and alloy wheels compared to the Maruti Baleno.

  • Identical cabin to the Baleno aside from a black-beige theme.

  • Includes a 360-degree camera, 9-inch touchscreen infotainment, connected car tech, a head-up display, and an Arkamys tuned sound system.

  • Will be powered by a 90PS 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine with 5-speed MT and 5-speed AMT gearbox options.

  • Rivals the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, it’ll take on the Tata Altroz, Hyundai i20, and Honda Jazz.

It was in February where Maruti Suzuki revealed an all new look for the Baleno hatchback for 2022, and now it's the Toyota Glanza, the Baleno’s counterpart, that has gotten an all new look. Priced from Rs 6.39  lakh, (ex-showroom, India), it is offered in four trims: E, G, S, and V, in either manual or automatic guise. The updates are so great that it is essentially a mix of a facelift and a generation update.

So what’s new in the Glanza? For starters, unlike the pre-facelift model (that was available in G and V trims), the 2022 iteration gains two new trims: E (base) and S (mid-spec), similar to the Baleno. Compare prices with the Baleno, and the Glanza carries a premium of Rs 4,000 to Rs 20,000 depending on the variant chosen.

As for styling, Toyota has given it a proper identity with a different chrome front grille, inspired by the Camry. The front bumper, LEDs and DRLs are new as well, with the alloy wheels being an 8-spoke design instead of the Baleno’s 10-spoke. There is some familiarity at the rear with new-split tail lamps with only the badging separating the two hatchbacks.

Head inside, and the cabin overhaul is pretty much identical to the Baleno, featuring a larger 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, new steering wheel, revised centre console and tweaked AC vents. That being said, the Glanza has a black-beige theme instead of the Baleno’s black-blue colour.

As for features, they remain the same as the Baleno, which include a head-up display, connected car tech (telematics), an Arkamys tuned sound system, 360-degree camera, automatic climate control, auto-LED headlights, and keyless entry with push-button start. Safety bits include six airbags and electronic stability control.

Under the hood, it will share the Baleno’s 90PS 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine, paired with a 5-speed manual as standard. This also means it’ll be ditching the CVT from before, with a 5-speed AMT being the automatic gearbox option. The carmaker claims the manual and AMT variants will have a fuel economy of 22.3kmpl and 22.9kmpl respectively.

Toyota will be offering the 2022 Glanza in five paint options: Cafe White, Enticing Silver, Gaming Grey, Sporting Red, and Insta Blue. Deliveries will begin the following week. Aside from the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, it’ll take on the Tata Altroz, Hyundai i20, and Honda Jazz.
