The Gravton Quanta can take you from Delhi to Spiti Valley in just Rs 80, thanks to its low running costs claimed by the company

Gravton Motors, a Hyderabad-based EV startup, has launched its Quanta electric two-wheeler in India. The brand has made many interesting claims about the Quanta, the most standout one, especially in these times of sky high petrol prices, being its low running cost of just Rs 80 for 800 km.

What’s The Price? Who Are Its Rivals?

The Gravton Quanta retails at an introductory price of Rs 99,000 (ex-showroom) and bookings have already begun through Gravton’s official website. First few customers will also get a complimentary charging station set up at their house by the company itself. This introductory offer is applicable for the first 1,000 customers or October 15th, whatever comes first. The Quanta will first make its way to Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Chennai, while the company aims to achieve pan-India availability from 2022.

The company has confirmed the Quanta's price doesn't include the FAME-II subsidy as it is still in the pipeline. Once approved, expect it to get more affordable.

One can choose between three colour options: white, red and black, the last one being a special edition variant with a limited production of just 1,000 units.

At this price, the Quanta goes up against the impressive Revolt RV400 and the Indian-made TVS iQube Electric, both of which saw a recent price reduction due to the FAME-II subsidy. After the reduction, the former also costs under Rs 1 lakh while the latter comes in at slightly over Rs 1 lakh.

What’s New?

Technically, all of it. The Quanta is an all-new indigenous product by Gravton. Aesthetically, it has a bare-bones design, with a circular headlamp, tall handlebar, and flat seat, with the battery neatly integrated between the seat and the handlebar. The company claims the Quanta is built on a ‘Rib caged chassis’ that helps it accommodate two swappable 3kWh Li-on batteries, each of which weighs 19.5kg. According to the Gravton, one battery pack can be charged in just 3 hours with a conventional charger while a fast charger cuts the charge time by half, thanks to a 1km/minute rate of charge.

One battery pack is claimed to return a range of 150km while if you plonk two, you’re sorted for the next 320kms. This range is achieved at a constant speed of 25kmph which we feel is a little slow, even for commuting.

Powering the Quanta is a 3kW in-house-developed BLDC hub motor putting out a peak torque of 180Nm (at the wheel), which can help propel it from 0 to 45kmph in 4.2 seconds, and to a top speed of 70kmph (both claimed).

On the feature front, it packs a fully digital LCD instrument cluster and all-LED illumination. Moreover, the LCD comes with smartphone connectivity that helps the rider get roadside assistance, find nearest service stations, track vehicle location and even remotely operate the lock and the lights. You also get three riding modes: Sport, City and Eco, offering 85km range at 60-70kmph, 110km range at 45kmph, 150km range at 25kmph, respectively.

Riding on 17-inch alloy wheels, the Quanta is sprung on a telescopic fork and twin shockers. Single disc brakes at both ends come standard on it and so does a combined braking system. The Quanta tips the scale at 98kg with a single battery pack, while the double battery setup weighs 117.5kg.

We feel the Gravton certainly has a lot of potential since it rounds up as a decently feature rich offering and also claims to offer better range than the most popular e-bike in India, the RV400. With the FAME-II subsidy extended till 2024, we hope to see price reduction for the Quanta to give it a better fighting chance against its rivals. Nevertheless, the Quanta is still a good deal, solely judging from the spec sheet.
