Black cars look dope! And joining the clan is the Tata Safari Dark, launched at Rs 19.06 lakh (ex-showroom). Like the Harrier, the all-black Safari is limited to the XT+, XTA+, XZ+, and XZA+. It goes without saying that, like other Tatas, the Safari’s black theme commands a premium of up to Rs 72,000 over the standard one.

The upgrades done to the Safari Dark are similar to the Harrier Dark. The flagship Tata is finished in Oberon Black shade with a pinch of dark blue. Also, all the chrome elements on the grille (save for the Tata logos), the roof rails, dual-tone alloy wheels, and window surrounds, are now blacked out for a stealthier look.
Inside, the dashboard and headliner is now finished in… you guessed it… black. All the contrasting silver trims are now in piano black, while the centre trim that spreads across the width of the dashboard is finished in dark grey. The seats are also finished in black and get tri-arrow blue detailing as seen in the Harrier Dark.
In terms of features, the top-spec Safari Dark edition gets all the niceties from the Gold Edition like the wireless phone charger, an air purifier and wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. Other notable features include an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, connected car tech, climate control, a panoramic sunroof, powered driver’s seat, a semi-digital instrument cluster, and drive and terrain modes.
Passenger safety is taken care of by six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with camera, electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system, and electric parking brake with auto hold.

Mechanically, the Safari Dark edition remains unchanged, utilising the familiar 170PS 2-litre diesel engine, clubbed with a 6-speed manual and automatic transmission.
The Safari Dark does improve the appeal of the SUV as it’s the only one in its segment to get an all-black theme, which goes better with the idea of a ‘premium’ offering. It locks horns with the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus, Hyundai Alcazar, and select trims of the Kia Carens.
