The Scrambler twins from Triumph return to take on the Ducati Scrambler family

After the global unveiling last month, Triumph Motorcycles has launched the special edition Triumph Scrambler 1200 Steve McQueen and the Street Scrambler 900 Sandstorm in India.

What's The Price? Who Are Their Rivals?

The 2021 Triumph Scrambler 1200 Steve McQueen is limited to just 1000 examples worldwide and has been priced at Rs 13.75 lakh. While the Brit scrambler doesn’t have a direct rival, the 2021 Ducati Desert Sled (Rs 10.89 lakh) is the only bike that comes close.

The Street Scrambler 900 Sandstorm will set you back by Rs 9.65 lakh (ex-showroom) and is only limited to 775 units globally. It goes up against the Ducati Scrambler 800.

What's New?

The 2021 Triumph Scrambler 1200 Steve McQueen is essentially a fancier XE variant. Modelled after the famous movie star and biker’s 1963 Triumph TR6 bike from the movie ‘The Great Escape’, the bike flaunts some unique bits. This includes a special “Competition Green” paint job complete with hand painted pinstripes. Even the logo receives a dash of gold. Further adding to the old school charm are the monza-style brushed aluminum fuel tank cap, a ribbed, bench seat and high-mounted stubby aluminum fender.

While the bike carries the same 1,200cc parallel-twin engine and though the performance figures haven’t changed, the peak outputs are achieved at slightly different rpms. The bike produces 90PS at 7250rpm (150rpm lower) and 110Nm at 4500rpm (550rpm higher).

The 2021 Street Scrambler 900 Sandstorm too shares a similar story. It gets a unique matte khaki paint scheme, and is essentially the standard Scrambler 900 equipped with a bunch of accessories. This includes a high-mounted front fender, tank grips, headlight grille and a tail tidy with an integrated LED tail light.

What's Unchanged?

The Scrambler 1200 Steve McQueen remains largely unchanged from its standard model and continues to use the same suspension and brake setup. To know more about the 2021 Triumph Scrambler 1200 Steve McQueen Edition, read this story.

The Triumph Scrambler 900 Sandstorm too doesn’t sport many changes apart from the aforementioned bits. Even the 900cc parallel-twin is largely the same, apart from being BS6 compliant. You can find more details about the baby Scrambler in this story.

We spent our fair share with the Triumph Scrambler 1200 in the trails and the twisties of Himachal Pradesh and came back impressed. But this is a purpose-built bike that wouldn’t ideally be the first pick for a big bike. This is probably the reason why Triumph chose to discontinue the bike in India and just have a handful of models.

The story is similar in case of the Triumph Scrambler 900 too. The lacklustre sales forced the British brand to silently pull the bike off the Indian market. With the Steve McQueen and Sandstorm Edition, the bike maker gets to offer exclusivity to buyers, which could lure more customers.
