The Volkswagen Polo has been instrumental in defining the VW brand in India since it first showed up in 2010, and it's imperative it got an honorable send off in the country. In comes the Polo Legend Edition, based on the GT TSI and has the same price tag at Rs 10.25 lakh (ex-showroom). But the folks at VW have cooked up something special for this limited-run Polo that also celebrates 12 years of the premium hatchback in India.
For starters, the Polo Legend Edition gets a few decals on the sides, a black roof and black trunk garnish to enhance the sporty feel already present in the Polo. Besides, to set it apart from the standard Polo, VW have slapped on ‘Legend’ badging on the boot as well as the quarter panels up front.
Considering it’s based on the GT TSI, the Polo Legend Edition comes with all the bells and whistles of the former. This includes auto AC, a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear AC vents, cruise control, and automatic wipers. It was also one of the first made-in-India cars tested to get a 4-star Global NCAP rating with safety kit such as dual front airbags as a standard fitment.
Under the hood, the Polo Legend Edition is limited to the 110PS 1-litre turbo-petrol TSI option from the GT TSI, paired with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The standard Polo can also spec a 6-speed manual with the 1-litre TSI mill on the Comfortline and Highline Plus variants. VW also offers a 75PS/95Nm 1-litre MPI engine, paired to a 5-speed manual transmission for the hatchback, but limited to the base-spec Trendline and mid-spec Comfortline.
With this, it's almost the end of the line for the Polo, but VW’s brand director Ashish Gupta did mention that “it isn’t goodbye for the Polo, but it’s au revoir (goodbye until we meet again).” Going by this, we could expect the next-gen Polo in India by 2023.
The VW Polo currently retails from Rs 6.45 lakh and Rs 10.25 lakh (ex-showroom), and rivals the Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Tata Altroz, and Honda Jazz.
