Some of the most sought-after compact SUV and sub-four metre SUV segments saw several major launches in 2024, including the Hyundai Creta facelift and Kia Sonet facelift as well as new launches, such as the Tata Curvv, Skoda Kylaq, and Citroen Basalt. Here is the list of what was launched in these segments.
Launched at the beginning of the year, the Hyundai Creta received a facelift with substantial updates across the board. Not only the best-seller of the compact segment got a fresh look inside and out, but also new features, including Level-2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), a 360-degree camera, and dual-zone AC to name a few.
Hyundai has also given it a new 160 PS 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, while 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit and 1.5-litre diesel engine have been retained.
For the first time, the Creta also received a sporty version like the i20 and Venue, the Creta N Line. This version of the SUV gets sporty design elements inside and out and comes with the potent turbo-petrol engine. The Creta N Line is priced between Rs 16.82 lakh and Rs 20.45 lakh (ex-showroom).
The compact SUV segment witnessed the launch of the Citroen Basalt this yeat. Unlike the conventional SUVs, this crossover coupe features a sloping roofline which makes it stand out in the segment. Key features of the Basalt include a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch all-digital driver’s display, a wireless phone charger, and adjustable under-thigh support for rear seats.
Powering the Basalt is a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine which makes 82 PS and 115 Nm, and a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit which churns out 110 PS and up to 205 Nm. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Another SUV-coupe in the compact SUV segment is the Tata Curvv, which is also available in an electric version, both of which launched this year. The Curvv comes with a panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, and ADAS. However, the stand out highlight of the Curvv is its new 1.2-litre T-GDi petrol engine which generates 125 PS and 225 Nm. Tata also offers a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 120 PS and 170 Nm and a 1.5-litre diesel unit which makes 118 PS and 260 Nm. 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission are standard across the board.
The Curvv EV gets the same features as its ICE counterpart and comes with two battery pack options: 45 kWh and 55 kWh. Both battery packs get a single motor setup, and this electric SUV-coupe offers an ARAI-claimed range of up to 585 km.
Kia updated its entry-level sub-compact offering, the Sonet, with a range of major changes in design, interior, and powertrain. Alongside a fresh sporty look, the updated SUV received a host of new features, such as Level 1 ADAS, a fully digital driver’s display, and a 360-degree camera.
Apart from the re-introduction of the 1.5-litre diesel engine with a manual transmission, the Sonet facelift retained the 1-litre turbo-petrol unit which makes 120 PS and 172 Nm and the 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that generates 83 PS and 115 Nm. Customers can choose from a 6-speed iMT, 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The Mahindra XUV 3XO, which is the facelifted version of the XUV300, was launched earlier this year with a first-in-segment panoramic sunroof. It also features a redesigned look, including a fresh fascia and a reworked rear end. Key features include dual 10.25-inch displays, 7-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, dual-zone AC, a 360-degree camera, and Level-2 ADAS.
Powertrain options are largely similar to the previous model, such as a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol (112 PS and 200 Nm), a 1.2-litre T-GDi unit (130 PS and up to 250 Nm), and a 1.5-litre diesel (117 PS and 300 Nm). Mahindra offers a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed AMT, and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Almost four years after its market introduction, the Nissan Magnite received a facelift in 2024. WIth this, the SUV gets a minor redesign on the outside and a new dual-tone theme for the cabin. The Magnite facelift carries more or less the same features as its predecessor, such as a fully digital driver’s display, a wireless phone charger, and a 360-degree camera. But 6 airbags are now a standard fitment.
Nissan offers the same 1-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine which makes 72 PS and 96 Nm and 1-litre turbo-petrol unit that delivers 100 PS and up to 160 Nm. Transmission options are a 5-speed manual, 5-speed AMT, and CVT automatic.
The Kylaq recently entered the ever-growing sub-compact SUV segment. It features a familiar but an upmarket design and a cabin layout similar to that of the Skoda Kushaq and Slavia. It boasts ventilated and powered front seats, a single-pane sunroof, a 10.1-inch infotainment system, an 8-inch digital driver display, a wireless phone charger, and 6 airbags (standard).
Unlike its rivals, which get multiple engine options, the Kylaq is powered by only a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 115 PS and 178 Nm, and is mated to a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
We expect carmakers to introduce new models, facelifts, and electric vehicles (EVs) in these SUV segments in 2025.
